    Hi guys, My 1980 1.6 SRX currently is runny great, but my only problem is that at highway speeds my steering feels a bit loose. If I am driving in town it feel fine. These are the things I have done to try to fix the problem: 1. The axl pinions in the gear box were worn so I changed them. 2. I calibrated and adjusted the rack and pinion (there was some play in the wheels) after the adjustment. the play is better. 3. Wheel alignment There is small improvement but it basically the same, Does anyone have any suggestions?

    I am sorry but $1,995 for a rebuilt or manufactured EA81 engine is crazy!!!!

    My 1980 1.6 SRX has dual carbs. Do these carbs contain Jets? Keep in mind this is a this is a Non-U.S model. I am confused, because I was told they do not have any. Any advise will be appreciated.

    I am from New York..... but I am currently living in Bogota, Colombia. 8,612 ft.

    But keep in mind......high altitude does effect compression readings. In all my Subaru manuals it says so. I just did not know the exact range. I just rebuilt my motor and the compression for each cylinder is about 102psi. so garage junky is dead on.

    Yes it actually does.... It is usually lower than at sea level. I just want to know an accurate range.

    Hi Guys! I hope you can help me here! I heard that compression levels change from sea level to high altitudes. I am in about 8,612 ft. What would be healthy compression range in my EA 71 engine?

    Yes.... you have the point. I never followed the years in those manuals . Just the engine model.

    Hi...... sorry to keep mentioning this. But pleas keep in mind. I had a Generation II 1986 GL 2WD 1.6 EA 71 which was considered a '84 crossover and a Generation II '89 DL 1.6 EA71 with the round headlights. After doing a little research yesterday was a '80 crossover. These were U.S.A models. Very strange. So anything is possible. I currently have a Generation II dual carb model! Which looked like my '89 model.

    That is your best bet..... it is really easy to identify. You will have clearance adjustment posts if they are not hydraulic.

    I know it is weird but I had an '86 & '89 2WD Generation II 5spd EA71 hatchback with air conditioning! For the '86, every time I went to the dealer they would label it an '84 carry over but the '89 I have no idea for the reason. I know that was the last year they made the Generation II.

    I actually had a U.S 5spd 86 & 89 gl hatchback 1.6 EA71 with factory installed air conditioning. I had to manually adjust the valves. I know that is weird! Subaru gurus never believed me until they saw my cars.

    Hi! Nice find! I purchased a 1980 Hatchback about 2 years ago. When I found the car it was in horrible shape. It had a horrible green color and the interior was ripped to pieces. Luckily the body was solid and the engine was good. Since then I have done this! It is now a completely different car and currently everything is working.

    Thank you!!! Yes twin carb..... but remember a liitle more fuel assumption and maintenance. But I have the say, if not pushed too hard the economy is about the same. Mechanics are always trying to convince me to convert it to a one unit. But I always say..... no!
