Wheel bearings going left and right 'round here!
benebob replied to benebob's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That blows about the press. As for converting the XT6 that really is something I wanted to do (have a 5 speed tranny in the basement) the downside is she is my WRX beater in autoxing. If I convert it to AWD I would also need to convert to the air suspension to remain legal in the H Stock class. It really wouldn't be nearly as competative in any other catagories. As for the BRAT. She's been frustrating me as of late. Probably b/c she didn't get an xmas present. If the price is right she can become a new englander. That is if I can't convice BattleAxe that he needs to trade me his XT6 for her. -
Wheel bearings going left and right 'round here!

That's my thought too. I'm just wondering how much easier. I don't have a garage to work in as the SVX is hibernating out there. As for the BRAT I'm wondering if it is even worth doing as I'm gonna take it in to get the distributer rebushed. -
The XT6's rear bearing started to get some play a few weeks ago and now the Brat has a front wheel bearing issue (at least it has play and makes some grinding when going around a turn- it is just raining to hard to have a decent looksee). I replaced the rears on the Brat last spring. IT SUCKED!!!! I had to remove the whole arms and take them to have the bearings pressed out. Is it easier to do the front BRAT bearing than the rear? How hard is the XT6 2wd rear bearing?

Brake line developed a leak on my Brat
benebob replied to benebob's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks Skip. I'll try to pin point it and will let ya know if I need the part numbers -
Came home yesterday and my Brat had a puddle of brake fluid under the master cylinder. Put some rags under the master cylinder for the night and today it has another puddle under it. Guessing that one of the steel lines below the hill holder has sprung a leak. Does anyone know where I might find a diagram of the lines, part numbers, if it is the same as other EA-81s or anything on these lines?

Yeah shipping to OR would be at least $15 each way so that is out. I guess I'll drop it off at his shop tomorrow and let him go at it. At least I feel better about breaking my broken distributor. Hee hee. He did assure me it was easy as anything. Maybe that's just because he hates working on my BRAT as it isn't a nice new Legacy or Forester. He has to think back a bit. Thanks for the offer Meeky but you're busy enough man! I'm quite lacking in the knowledge when it comes to electrics so might as well let a mechanic take care of it.

Well I couldn't find a disto at the jy today so I got some new bushes from my mechanic. He assured me that it was a breeze to take apart. As it is snowing outside I figured I'd start by taking apart my old broken on from a dead engine to make sure I don't mess the rebuildable one up. Well he said to knock the roller pin out. I couldn't do that and drilled it out but still the gear won't come off the shaft. Any ideas or should I just take it to him. There aren't any places around here that'll rebush it except him and I don't want to chance not having it in the same position when I get it back as I don't have a gun.

I just got a set of 93 Alloys from a junkyard to use as autox wheels. I paid $60 for 4. Wouldn't pay much more for 14" subaru wheels as they tend to all develop the same "issues" as they age. Basically they peel if not kept real clean. So long as they are round and w/o too much curb rash you should be fine. You might want to check out http://www.car-parts.com as well Might luck out and have a yard willing to sell for under $100 real close to home. That way you'll save on shipping. I'd suspect shipping would be at least $25-30.

Thanks everyone. I suspected this was the case. I've never been good at timing. Can rebuild a carb with my eyes closed but electric is greek. Well there is no way I can afford one except a yard distributor until after Xmas. Spent way too much the past week or two and haven't been working so nothing coming in. It'll have to wait at least until mid January when we finish the job we're working on. Hope she'll hold out another 5k. If not I'm pretty much screwed.:brolleye: No one has a used disto they wanna part with cheap do they?

I've been suffering with the dreaded tac jump for a few weeks and it hasn't gotten better. I'm assuming it is a bad distributor as it makes a slight electrical whine when the tac does the dance. It couldn't be anything else really right assuming the wires aren't crossed or nicked or 20 years old? Is there anyway to fix this one easily? How about a junkyard replacement. How do I tell if it'll work? Can I put it in w/o a timing gun???

I waz gonna get the whole car but I only need a few things off it. Was gonna part the rest out but if my biggest investor is out then I'm probably out too.

I have a lead on an XT6 auto 4wd for parts and have a friend with a RX who would like to make it a 5 lug. Will we be able to get everything needed of this XT6 or will he need struts from a 2wd XT6???
-
I kind of expected it to be discontinued unless it was a huge seller. It seemed to me that it was simply a stop gap measure to keep the factory at as full capacity as possible with an old Legacy platform (a very common auto trick). I really hope the value drops as much as the SVX. I'll have one in the driveway w/in 3 years if thats the case.!

I think they are pretty unique. Did you not go to EZ Pull due to the snow? I did take next Saturday off work to autox in Reading. Should be done there by noon or 1 so could be at EZ Pull by 2.

Why does my oil dipstick keep popping out!?
benebob replied to Warp3's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If it is like my SVX dipstick (which does the same thing) it has an o-ring on the end to help hold it in place. You've probably just worn it out. -
The belt is the same. California just forced manufacturers to give longer "warranty" that the belt would last. I guess they don't do service out there like they should:D . Get the vin and call your local subie serivce dept or the 1800 number. They can tell you if there are any open recalls on the car. Check the tranny fluid real good. Warm the car up and pull out the dipstick for it. If it smells like burnt toast or is brand new (i.e. the seller tells you it was just serviced and there are other things that still need done on the car) walk away.
