Gen2 brat waterpump replacement?
benebob replied to Bigbusa's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Good luck changing the T-belt on a Brat. It is simple compared to an EA-82. I'd say nice brat as well but no pic showed up on my stinky computer but I'll trust the others have already swelled your head enough to do the job. -
Can you push it to start it? It could be the starter switch or solinoid. Try bridging the big wire on the starter and the small wire with the clip on it with a nice insulated screwdriver or something. Have the car in NEUTRAL and with the key on the ON position. If it is a switch problem or a connection other than the battery it'll start right up. Oh yeah watch for the sparks.

Using the wife's legacy to go to NY skiing on Sunday so I figured I'd replace the brushes as PS has been intermittent again. (Light has been on pretty much the whole time). Replaced the brushes only to find that I crushed one of the wires on the brushes. Put it back in and the case broke. . Found one so the wife has a car while I'm gone. Had to pay $75 for it b/c the JY that I know has one was closed and with snow and ice expected tonight they definately won't be open tomorrow. New/used one that worked when it was pulled about a year ago doesn't work. What else could it be and how can I test for other issues??? Any ideas? At least it now can be driven but she hates the lack of ps as she works downtown.

3at 4wd tranny question..

No ATF in dif!!! Not good. -
Just an FYI You have to be present at the drawing to win (which is Sunday at like 3). Anyone who is planning to leave earlier give me your tics and put your name on them and I'll see you get your VW. I have no need for one of those. One VW in a lifetime (after growing up in the back seat of a bug) is more than one ever needs.

To be honest I really don't think such an engine would help sales all that much. Sure you'll get a few more with it but the cost of that engine is outrageous (just like an SVX engine was/is). Really how many Americans are gonna shell out $35k for a Subaru??? 14k did for the SVX and most of those sold for WELL under invoice. I'd say there just gonna price themselves out of competition for the established base of Subaru buyers. Cheap, amazing reliability, economical and AWD are what Subaru has been about since they came here. Changing that now is a HUGE gamble.

I have two of the original H-6s. Much nicer engines as far as smoothness and power than any 4 cylinder Subie I've driven (and I've driven them all except any Gen 1s or earlier). Turbos are nice for somethings but also lack in the idea of power when you want it. Besides, turbos are dirty engines by their nature. The H-6 release far fewer pollutants into the atmosphere then the current batches of turbo.

Need Dist Drive Gear from EA81
benebob replied to colosuby's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah that is total BS. I got one less than a year ago when mine got chewed to bits. It was pricey but here in a day. $65 or so I think from the local Stealer. -
I figured it was an auto. Just trying to give ideas for sourcing where the fluid is going. It worked great on the Brat. The dust sleeve should be part of any rebuild kit. Word of advice though rebuilding 'em is hard as crap from what I understand. Most garages don't even do it anymore.
-
Only concern I'd have is that they drain the right fluid. I don't know how many stories I've heard where these chain places not understanding boxers pull the dif bolt, drain the front dif fluid then add oil to the engine creating 2 issues. Of course the issues tend to take a day or so to develop. Just make sure you check your fluid levels before leaving.

Oh so Keith it was probably you that wouldn't pull over and let me by in their STi even though they were going 20mph while I had no problems taking the FWD XT6 with 4 bald tires at least 2x as fast. :D . Just kidding by the way but that was the 3rd idiot WRX drive I've encountered this week. Maybe Subaru should send all WRX purchasers to drivers school so they aren't an embarrassment to the rest of us.

What's it look like under the master c.? Might want to try putting a rag under it at night. That is how I figured out my hill holder was leaking and not the m.c. in the brat. I know you have snow on the ground as well so it'll be a pain but you could also put rags under each caliper. It could be a leaky caliper. If it was a line in the engine bay you'd notice it being wet and all but just in case you could take a hose and spray the frame rails. If there is brake fluid there it'll develop a white film on top of the water (almost like water and oil makes the rainbow film). Aside from that I'm kinda at a loss for the grinding noise. Provided one of the pistons isn't stuck open and the pad is grinding against it. Very unlikely but possible but more than likely it would pull when braking. Also how were the dust shields on the calipers? Could one have majorly went south and let enough crud in to hurt the seal?

What might this XT be worth?
benebob replied to Esteban32696's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Two main issues pop into my head. 1st already mentioned- head gasket/cracked head issues 2nd air suspension issues That said one in this condtion in theory should retail for $2000ish. Ebay vote for me a very reasonable $1400 then if it isn't as stated walk away or explain why it isn't worth that kind of money. I must agree with everyone else though it is a very cool car with an amazingly weird (in that cool subaru way) interior. -
EZ Auto parts in New Ringgold PA, Harry's in Hazelton. Both have websites

Getting off a stripped brake line
benebob replied to benebob's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Don't know what kind of world you live in but I got laughed at by the 3 NAPA's I just called. Metric doesn't seem to be part of their vocab. -
Getting off a stripped brake line

The hill holder is leaking a good small bottle of brake fluid every month. Weird thing is it doesn't seem to be doing it all the time. I'm gonna go to the yokel jy in the am and cut out a stinking line. Bad thing is the newest EA-81 they have was last inspected in 99. -
Getting off a stripped brake line
benebob replied to benebob's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Nothing 10mm fits. I can actually almost get an 8mm around it. I can't really cut it w/o a new one and I'm sure the local dealer will take 3 weeks to get the right one in. %$&*&^ -
I got a new hill holder valve today but can't seem to get off the brakeline that goes out the bottom. It is completely stripped on both ends (goes over to the pass side firewall and connects to another) I tried using a pair of small vice grips but even they slide before loosing the thing. Any ideas out there?

Brake line developed a leak on my Brat
benebob replied to benebob's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Here's the odd thing. The Brat has completely stopped leaking brake fluid for the past 3 days. Thought that maybe it was b/c it had warmed up but it was darn cold last night. Not a drop. Funny thing is the hill holder arrived today from CCR. Any ideas out there? -
Wheel bearings going left and right 'round here!
benebob replied to benebob's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Know what you mean. It doesn't literally kick WRX butt but when you take the handicap into it WRXs eat XT6 dust:D :D .
