Hey and can anyone please help.
breaffyaviation replied to Niall's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Niall, Failte romhat go dti an bord. In answer to your question,Subaru did not start building engines that bend valves until sometime around 1997.You only need replace the belts.Check why it broke, tensioners etc. On the earlier 1800 engines, once you set the first belt to the mark on the plastic housing , you had to turn the engine a full turn ,before you set the second belt to its mark .I dont know if yours is the same, but its definitely something to watch for as the manuals are not very clear on this. Its an easy fix. Do they still pull a good pint in Madigans? Slan go foill. Jude -
Hi everyone again, and I have a question.I was always under the impression that a stock EA 81 produced its best power in the 4000 rpm to 4800 rpm. range. However I was reading an article which suggested this engine produced more power at 2800 .Can this be right.?Without mods? Thank you in anticipation . Jude

The End of an era for the NY/NE area

Paul, Better to go quickly than linger .Still 45 is way way too young. You have our sympathies. Always remember ,should you and the family wish to visit the Windy City,we've got spare bedrooms and you'r very welcome. Jude And Helen. -
As far as I know there is a low spot between 3500 and 4000 when the low range turbo has maxed and the high range turbo is not fully wound up .Only speaking from hearsay. Jude

Blown 85 Subaru GL Wagon Engine
breaffyaviation replied to rosser1982's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
] How does a decent carbed Ea 82 delivered to Peoria for 175 bucks sound ? Let me know Jude -
You can use either engine with safety. The Ea 82 is easier to find and cheaper and more powerful. With a new set of belts it will last a lifetime and even if one breaks its a minor repair on a trike.A broken belt will not cause any bent valves. The only years to avoid are the later models from 97 on with the 2.5 engine although I have no experience with those and I am only going on hearsay. One other thing that might affect your choice is the EA 82 is 33 inches wide where the Ea 81 is only 28 . Flywheel teeth
breaffyaviation replied to breaffyaviation's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
What I want to end up with is a set of ring gear teeth off a flywheel that I can weld to the flex plate of an automatic to make an ultralight flywheel serving only one purpose ,to transmit starter motor power to the engine at the lightest possible weight. Thank you to all who responded . Jude -
Is it possible to remove the EA 81 flywheel ringgear without damage? .Is it press fitted or forged as part of the whole thing? Anybody succeeded doing this ? Heat? Hammer and chisel ? Lathe? Would appreciate any advice. Jude

Thank you for the opportunity to meet good people and the hospitality shown to us.. Sorry we could not wait for the Guinness but we were too miserable and wet ,very wet from changing a waterpump in the rain. Nice to visit but great to get home to SUNNY Chicago. I will never complain about Chicago weather again. No problems on the way home ,Dodge van ,new waterpump and a full load of Ea 81 engines made it home in record time .If your ever in the Heartland ,come visit and we'll go for that Guinness. Regards The two Judes.

I'm making a run to Moosans tomorrow night coming back Saturday .Route will be from Connecticut thro New Jersey,Pennsyllvania,Ohio,Indiana to Chicago, basically I 80 most of the way.Anybody looking for bits from Moosans (not too large) along the way ,let me know by noon tomorrow before I leave ,,or after that let Moosans know or phone me at 708 257 6714. If you can meet along the way maybe I can help someone out. I m not too interested in leaving the main drag since its already an 1800 mile round trip .Anybody further west than Chicago can have their stuff brought to my place and come pick it up after the weekend. Loose Crank pulley help
breaffyaviation replied to summitbro's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
There should be a locator pin in the back of the pulley that fits into a hole in the gear behind it. (Ea 82 engine). It has probobly sheared off ,but the only purpose it serves is to position your pulley for setting timing. The car will run perfectly well without it. I prefer to torque the pulley bolt to 100 pounds,I think Haynes have got it wrong at the recommended 75. No need of loctite. My 2 c Jude (Ea 82 in Avid Flyer ,now building EA 81 to replace it.) -
EA82, 240k, bent valves, replace?
breaffyaviation replied to lebnjay's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Your "mechanic "had no idea what he was doing. You can NOT bend valves on an 82. Fixing your problem is something any of us can walk you thro. I screwed up mine first time but I do not claim to be a proffessional mechanic. Beware of chancers. The only time you should ever approach a dealership is to check the backlot for abandoned subies. Jude -
I weighed mine ,Longblock 140. Jude

EA 82 stripped of all its bolt on bits 140 pounds. With everything attached ,pushing 180 without the flywheel. Jude

Someone mentioned using the aircraft carb setup on your 22.The only Soob engine I am aware of running on dual carbs are the ea 81 and Ea 82 on dual mikuni carbs. Trouble comes in pairs.Everyone else seems to stick to the FI.By the way what do you intend doing with the VW engine? Jude

Do any of our experienced engine buiders know if there is any difference between the main and rod bearings in an Ea 81 and Ea 82? Are they the same thing and swappable ? Jude

can an ea82 handle hydrogen power
breaffyaviation replied to dragonwingsubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Remember, there is no such thing as a free lunch. Free perpetual motion has only been achieved by one man ,who only comes out once a year and operates a sleigh.A Mr S Claus I think. Now seriously, lets look at the subject. You are talking about four different things here .First ,running your car on Hydrogen, Definitely possible and has been done. We experimented with this back in 73 and 74 but due to the fact that hydrogen could not be readily found ,we used propane instead.Car lost about 10 mph at the top end, burned about 10% more fuel, but it was readily available and dead cheap. We had a button to press which injected both propane and gasoline at the same time if you needed a burst.I ran the system for years and the only ill effect was some valve trouble due to a lack of upper cylinder lubricant in the lpg.Hydrogen in my opinion should not cause any ill effects to a stock engine. Now to issue number 2 Storing hydrogen is the problem. It takes too much energy to liquify the hydrogen but it can be carried in gas form. The problem is it takes up 4 times the volume of gasoline for a 10% increase in efficiency. Issue number 3 It takes way more energy to produce the hydrogen by electrolysis than your engine will produce. The only way hydrogen vehicles will become viable as hydrogen burners is by using hydrogen produced by nightime hydro, wind farms or other renewables.Burning coal to produce electricity to make hydrogen is only moving the pollution from the road to the powerstation. Issue number 4. Using spare capacity off peak electricity produced by renewables to make hydrogen to charge fuel cells. These do not burn the gas but produce the electricity back thro chemical action to power electric motors in the cars of the future. To get back to your situation, your car will run on hydrogen. You will not get it from water in any useful quantity onboard. Set up a wind turbine in your yard to produce the hydrogen, Dont believe anyone who tells you water will burn(ask any fireman) Please keep us infomed of your progress and congratulations on your spirit. May be I could run an airplane on this ,no weight fuel and plenty of storage space behind the seats? Goodnight all Jude -
Can you tell?
breaffyaviation replied to breaffyaviation's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ok, so forget the second patt of the question. Can anyone answer the first part ? Jude -
Did you change your fuel pump? The carbd fuel pump is no good for SpFI . Jude

Looking at pulled EA 81 engine ,if you dont know its history, how can you tell if it lived in a brat or a passenger vehicle ?.I believe the brat engine developes its torque at a lower R.P.M. If this is correct, what are the differences , or what can be done to the wagon engine to get peak power at lower RPM? Is the camshaft profiled differently,? Different compression ratio? The manual is pretty silent on the subject. A second question : Has anybody machined their case to take a thrust bearing on the flywheel end, like they do with the VW aircraft conversions?Looking at that center main bearing,it looks like there is not much meat on it to withstand seriously increased thrust? Maybe my fears are more imagined than real, but no harm in asking. Thank you to those who took the time to read this. Regards , Jude

My new project, Air Cooled Vanagon to Subaru EJ22 Conversion
breaffyaviation replied to ShawnW's topic in Subaru Transplants
Just in case anyone is interested, there is a conversion plate setup for vw to subaru on e bay right now still at small money.I dont know how to post the reference details but I came on it searching under Subaru engine. Jude -
Do the job with the valves in the closed position,i.e when that cylinder is coming up on compression. Have someone hold that long narrow thingy that belongs to the wifes vacuum cleaner in the vicinity of the work. When your done jam it down on the plughole . With the valves closed the suction should clean anything that got in the hole . Now go face the wife and try explaining your way outta that . Jude

Blown head gasket in Portland
breaffyaviation replied to sadsube's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Consider this, the main reason any of us ever learned to fix an engine was that we had 2 choices : fix it yourself or walk. I intensely dislike walking. We can point you in the direction of people who have parts they are no longer using and its not a big deal to pop the heads off an ea 82 and you will get plenty help and direction from this board. I know I did and still do.. If you never did this kind of work, well ,you will not learn any younger. You can then go back to the dealer and ask him if his price includes a kiss.Tell him you like a kiss when you are being ****** Good luck, Jude
