  1. What do they mean by doing a vacuum test on a EA 81 head? What does it tell you ?cracked head or bad valves or what? Thanks in advance . Jude
  2. I just finished cleaning up my carbon encrusted heads tonight. They were absolutely filthy. Scraped off all I could get at down the galleries with a screwdriver , scotch brite pad for the mating surfaces, then took the heads down to the local "do it yourself "car wash where they have a hot water pressure washer. The heads look like they left the factory. Cant beat that hot steamy water.(Got soaked in the process) Regards; Jude
  3. Thanks for the reply. Im ok with the gasket material, its the baked on hard black stuff down inside the galleries Im after. When I was a kid,we used stuff cauled caustic soda, but cant find it anymore and anyway they were Iron heads and would stand a lot more abuse.BTw the big subject for discussion that time was if we could put a man on the moon. Jude
  4. Shouldent need a helicoil.I just tapped mine a size bigger.Worked fine ,took the torque. Jude
  5. Any advise on cleaning hardened crud off the inside of my heads? I have the heads off and can soak them in a solvent but dont know what is safe to use without damaging the aluminum. Thanks in advance, Regards Jude
  6. How can you tell if an ea 81 longblock motor was a turbo or not if everything is stripped off it? Did any of the carbed engines come with turbo? Thanks in advance. Jude
  7. Ive got one if you dont find any locally .Got around 100000 miles on it ,dry and not leaking.Im in Chicago. Jude
  8. I have a single barrel carter holly with an adapter plate if you want to try it .I paid 50 bucks for it rebuilt. If it works it will cost you 50 bucks ,if not just cover the mailing and send it back.No emissions and manual choke.I had it on an Ea 82 Send me a Pm as I dont often check the messages on the board. Jude
  9. And Ive got 3 ea 81 engines, spare blocks ,clutches starters etc manifolds and carbs (no webers) Only problem is Im in Chicago. Jude
  10. send me a fax number and I'll fax you the page .You can send it to my Pm. Jude
  11. Your Subaru engine does not have thrust bearings or washers .The forward to back play you mention is caused by serious wear on your middle main bearing which has two side flanges that act as your thrust washers .This play suggests serious main bearing wear and no amount of flushing will help. Jude
  12. Thank you Miles. The info was not for me personally but for someone who wanted to know.I'm strictly Ea 81 and 82 Regards Jude
  13. They must be reliable, although I have no personal experience, because theres a bunch of them out there being used in aircraft by the big money boys. However ,working on a heavily modded engine on a plane ,with full access is a whole different ballgame than the skinned knuckles brigade.Moosans told me he had one at some stage ,maybe he would have some input. Jude
  14. Having no experience of anything newer than an 85 Ea 82,can anybody tell me is belt replacement on an EJ 20 T carried out in the same way as the 82,by timing the first one and then rotating the engine a turn for the second one. Thanks in advance . Jude
  15. They no longer call themselves junkyards. You now pay to visit a Recycling Center. Jude
  16. Thank you for the replies even if I got no bites.Thought there might be someone out there who does flywheel work or similar. Looks like its back to the drawing board. Regards Jude
  17. Did that, turned the piece to within one eighth of an inch and handed it off to a machine shop, gave them the flywheel teeth ring gear and it came back egg shaped. They had over cut the flywheel so that you could see daylight between the ringear and the disc making a heat and shrink fit impossible.I'm looking for a competent guy who probobly worked his years in a machine shop and now has his own at home and is willing to do a cash job. Jude
  18. I need a part turned to bolt onto the flywheel end of an Ea 81 crankshaft,a shaft and two flanges 5 inches long in total and cut from solid 4 1/2inch aluminum round.I do not have equipment for accurate work.Someone with a lathe capable of mounting the crank ,to turn the whole piece could handle the job.I will provide the aluminum, and payment however you want it.You can send me a pm with a phone number.Im in Chicago but will travel a few hours or could ship the piece with drawings to someone who has a crankshaft on hand..Thanks in advance. Jude
  19. Longblock, with everything removed except distributor and intake manifold if memory serves me right was 125 pounds with no oil or water. If you need exact weight I can weigh one.(Ive got 4) Jude
  20. Sorry, dont have a socket, however I can have a beer to celebrate your bithday. Jude
  21. You should always retorque a head after its reached operating temp in my opinion, whether the book says so or not (my opinion after 40 years screwing with engines) .If you are having problems with stripped threads,I have plenty head bolts to spare and some crankcase halves I will not be using plus a whole bunch of ea 81 engine stuff mainly everything to do with clutches, carbs and anything that attaches to the intake manifold plus some spare complete engines . Happy Memorial Day to everyone. Jude
