  1. Gee Zack, that is awful trusting of you forsomeone from New York. . . Oh wait, do you live anywhere near the city of New York? Or are you upstate? If upstate, I can understand then. . . .
  2. Also double check the count you got. I count three or four times to be sure I did not miss a tooth or skip one. . .
  3. You could do both, but if you just do one, do the front one first. The front one is used for fuel trim, and the second one is a check on the first.
  4. and cost a lot more than that hypothetical alternator you sem to be worried about. . .
  5. 4EAT and 5MT take different tranny mounts due to the large flat pan on the 4EAT. The only difference in the procedure, and the hardest part of the 4EAT mount swap is finding a place to jack up the tranny without crushing in that flat pan (Transmission fluid drain pan, which is to your tranny what the oil pan is to your engine)
  6. Heh, that is what is in my car now, as I did not have the cash for a good clutch when mine went out and I needed the car back on the road now. . . I got the lifetime warranty though, so I brought in annother burnt out clutch and pressure plate (cast off parts from a conversion) and now have a replacement ready and waiting in case this one shows itself to be short lived (and yes, I'm being nasty to it to get it to do so. I did not resurface the flywheel when I put this in due to time and the same no cash status).
  7. That is because most North Americans do not bother to properly learn how to drive a car. They just want it to go when you step on the gas and stop when you press on the brake. Who cares what is happening under the hood, let the mechanic worry about it. . . The problem is that they drive with the same attitude, and regularly try and defy the laws of physics. . . (the result being that they are suddenly going nowhere, and everyone behind them is moving along at a crawl)
  8. Even though my clutch slips a bit (I was sloppy when I replaced it and did not get the flywheel turned. You don't get much traction on a shiny surface. . .), I usually only get this when I'm in stop and go up a steep incline, or pushing/pulling cars up the same kind of incline.
  9. I was getting 20-25MPG until I threw in a can of SeaFoam, and a new O2 sensor. Now I get 22-27MPG. I'm not shy about the gas pedal either. . .
  10. IIRC, you can swap in Outback struts and springs into a Legacy to get the 3" lift. Don't quote me on that though. There are also several aftermarket products to lift your Legacy, or lower it for better handling. THat is the trade off, you know: higher lift poorer handling, lower lift better handling. . .
  11. Also if the leak is very slight as you say, perhaps the bolts just need to be retorqued(I used to know how to spell. . .) . With as many miles as you have on your car, however, I would replace them as 1) it is an easy job to do yourself. 2) they are likely to need to be replaced in the near future anyway. . .
  12. My guess is there is a good independant Subie mechanic and his name is Lim. Finding him however. . . .
  13. Yours is spring loaded? what year did they do that? As for the syrup problem, I was working on the wiring under the dash and it started raining. . . I had already removed the cupholder prepotory to removing the dash trim (I was working on the guages). I had noticed that soda had spilled all over the cupholder (yes, I use mine) so I thought to myself "well, why not?" I put the cupholder on the roof of the car and closed the door. . . By the time I was done working on the dash, and had everything back together, it had stopped raining and my cupholder was clean as a whistle. . . . I dried it off and reinstalled it. . .
  14. It is a matter of supply and demand. Outbacks are more popular than Legacies, and they get new features first because of it (extra power outlets, etc). Because more people want them, and there are fewer people that are selling them (used market), the price is higher.
  15. No, you jack up the tranny (be careful of the pan, do not jack from there. Find an available section of the case itself to jack from, perhaps under the front differential? Take the old mount off (along with the crossmember) and swap out the mount (leave the bolts between the crossmember and the mounts loose until you get it all ligned up and all bolts started), tighten everything down, then take the jack out, and you have just swapped out the tranny mounts. . .
  16. under and behind the intake manifold, just to the right (if looking from the front of the car) of the Throttle Body. It is a black doughnut looking thing with a bolt in the middle of it. Look for cracks in the casing, and scan for codes relating to it (you will need a scan tool to do this, but should probably get one anyway if you are going to do much work on your Subie anyway)
  17. You are not alone. There are several on this board that have expressed similar distaste for teh B9 grille. I, personally, intend to take a wait and see attitude. Untill I see it in person, I will not make a decision on the B9.
  18. I'll second that the sloppy ripping out of the alarm system (particularly the imobiliser) is a likely fault. As for there having been a 1.8 SPFI Legacy, I'm betting that being in New Zeland may have something to do with it. . . Everywhere but the US/Canada they generally go with smaller engines to save on fuel. (well, that's my guess anyway). Oh and is this an actual Legacy, or the Liberty that they sell the car as down there?
  19. Bill, my responses are in blue. Also I'm very close to you geographicly. If you ever have any trouble with your Subies, shoot me a PM on here.
  20. If you have a manual transmission. Automatics do not like to be towed with driven wheels on the ground (has to do with tranny fluid being pushed the wrong way, I think)
  21. Yup, right above the stereo and right below the heater-A/C controls. . . If you put a drink in either side both controls are blocked, on top of the spillage problem. . . And to think they kept it that way for a decade. . . .
  22. http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/performance/index.php?makeid=su&model=legacy&year=1993&part=clutch_kit&part_brand=exedy The last 4 are your clutch
