I just stripped out an 16 and 1800 motor, and broke both the oil pumps taking them off. Both broke at the base. What am I doing to these poor pumps?

I ended up pulling it as a unit. Went really well. I pulled the tranny mount bolts, put a jack under the tranny and lifted it. Pulled the crossmember off and the torsion (?) bar (the heavy round bar). I already had the radiator out. Everything cleared as it came out. I chained to the back pick point, with the wgt. of the tranny, it created the perfect angle for the whole unit to clear . The wagon was up on blocks. This was a field strip exercise, so I brought some plywood so the cherry picker had something to roll on. The fine art of engineering a project so it can be done by one person.

I've never seen those chrome wheel covers. nice little wagon I'm also a proud owner of a '78, a brat.

The reason I wanted to pull it all together, is so I won't have to wrestle the tranny out by myself. I'll look at it again and size up the situation.

I'm just about ready to pull the whole assembly. Was wondering if I should take the wgt. off of the whole unit, then pull the tranny cross member off, so it would have more room to tip and clear every thing when I remove it. I am using a cherry picker. The wagon is a ea'81, 4 whl, dual range. Hope to hook the dual range up to my ea'71 brat.thanks dp.

Had to throw my two cents in. In the real world of buying used cars is a fundamental rule. Buyer beware. Nobody is twisting your arm to buy a car. No offense but you should have taken your loan out for the whole amount. You snooze you lose. (second rule for buying used cars). respectfully yours.dave.

How hard is it to replace one? I think I have heard horror storys about swappinig new ones in. Can they be bought (from Subaru, anywhere?) The brat went into the shop for a front end shimmy,and the mechanic somehow fouled up the switch.I knew it was going out, so I used to leave the key in it, and locked the doors. (crime here isn't too bad). Now it is sitting on the curb really dead in the water. For now does anyone have a tip to hot wire it so I can move it? Damn,the double whammy! PS: %&^***$$$$$,motor mounnts aren't cheap!

I feel your pain. I have never had heat in my '78. The core leaks, and someone robbed the blower motor before I bought it. The worst part is not having defrost. Anyone comes up with any help would be appreciated, thanks, dave (second in line).

I own two brats, '78,'79. But gen ones on the road are getting more rare around here. When ever I scan the Phoenix classified I never see them. I could probably say there are around a doz. on the road around here.

I don't know of any good yards around here. We used to have 3 or four , now only one in Prescott Valley and one near Humbolt. I haven't been to either one. Seems like Phx. should have alot. But once I was down there for another vehicle, and they didn't have one suby.

I like that idea, I could keep it all intact.

I bought an ea-71 and clutch from Raising Sun Engines and had it shipped to the house (Calif. to AZ.). Came to 500.00 It has 35,000 on it, runs great. I'd do it again.

I am stripping out an '81 4 whl wagon. I'd like to take the pedal assembly in case someday we switch out from the auto in the '84 brat. In my old '78, after I removed the circlip, I could drift out the rod that the pedals swing on. I don't seem to be able to do that. Any suggestions? thanks, dave.

'84 brat. We finally have a kickass monsoon season this year. But the brat smells like well used converse sneakers. Anyone had this problem, where should I look? Water must be getting in somewhere.
