  1. We havent had cold weather yet, but its been a seven thousand miles and one triple didgit speed run, and i am still very happy with them. I have heard that they may get stiff when the weather turns cold, but all suspensions do that. nipper
  2. I'm going with a stuck t-stat. The engine temp mid poing on the gauge is only 10 degrees higher then the opening temp of the t-stat, so it does cycle open closed to keep the temp up. Since yours is stuck open, it never gets a chance to warm up. Also time to change the coolant and radiator cap. mipper
  3. These are not your standard roll pins. They have one way in and one way out (well they come out either way, but one direction is easier then the other). This may be something you need to get from a real parts house or a dealer. nipper

  7. well also its rare these days for a belt to snap. Usually they just jump a tooth as we see that a lot here (when the timing is off). I'm just wondering if some "drivers error" was involved. nipper

  10. Weird fan action, without the green connnectors together, is one of the reasons to suspect the ECU. nipper
  11. Maybe it didnt come out right, i meant a 10% chance. I mean in general on engeins, not just subaru engines. In doing a quick search (refreshing my memory) i found quite a few on the toyota board that were non-interferance but had the same scenario. They ranged from debree to who knows to oil pump failure to weak valve spring. What did the top of the piston look like? nipper
  12. PS. is this a stock engine, or have the heads been milled? ANother possability, not that any of us ever do this .... DId you over rev the engine, miss a shift, or have a bad valve spring? All can cause bent valves under the right circumstances in a non interference engine. nipper

  14. Well 90% no. there is always a chance of a bent valve when a timing belt snaps. I dont remeber how the valve adjustment is done on this, but a split shim can cause a timing belt to break. you may be looking at this the wrong way, as it may be why did the valve bend, then cause the timing belt to break. As fast as these things open and close, they are "eased" onto the seat, and there is always contact with the cam. If the valve stuck open, it would slam against the cam. Thsi sudden loading could cause a well worn belt to snap. Inspect the cam for damage too Chicken (belt) - egg (valve) i vote for the egg. nipper
  15. Was just wondering if the green diagnostic connector under the dash was hooked up, and then never disconnected. That is usually the reasons the fans are always on, along with other weirdness. nipper
  16. Remove the door pnael and you should see a rod is popped off someplace. Haynes has a picture of it thats a little hard to follow, but the great thing is that the pass side works. If you cant see whats wrong with the drivers side, remove the passenger side and compare. It should jump out at you. One of the retaining clips are broken. nipper
  17. You can increase the fuel mileage and hP of a car, its done all the time, with almost the same displacement. Just llok at the history of the automotive engine (take a chevy 350 which has been around for ages, and look at the specs over the year). The more effecient the car runs, the cleaner it is, and the most it gets from the fuel. A simple thing as running too rich can reduce power output. Now I did see something like this, but i can't remember where. UPS doesnt have to do much to increase the MPG of the trucks to see savings. Everytime you add a fuel, you add a complication. Mono fuel vehicals are cheaper to use in the long run. Turbines can run on almost any fuel, and they have come a long way with micro-turbins. There are a few commuter busses running around (NYC is testing one) that uses a turbine to charge batteries, then shuts down untill needed. Its supposed to be scarily quiet. Hydrogen has a really really long way to go before we see it in home or personal use. Heheh just wait till the consumer hears it has an invisable flame. so you can't see the gas burning as it leaks out nipper
  18. Check the universal joint in the steering column under the hood. Also go to www.endwrench.com and look there in the archives. nipper
