to all brat masters?????????
i have the x-member from a 2wd auto 1980 (ea81)hatch and you can have it for free. i'm sure it's the same (you pay shipping) you may also need the brackets that the leading rods mount to. i might have those or i might have thrown them out. i'll check. let me know through email or PM if you want what i got.

weber rebuild q's
1.) i took my junkyard 32/36 dgav apart and the only thing i can't get out is the secondary throttle shaft, which comes out about 1/4" and then gets stuck. i am afraid to tap it out w/ a small hammer and punch. any suggestions? 2.) i was planning on just soaking the body parts in carb cleaner, blowing out all the little holes w/ compressed air, and putting it all back together w/ all the new parts in the rebuild kit. the manual sais to reseat certain points. i don't have the tools to do this. is this nesseccary, or should i just clean and re-assemble? 3.) i found a bunch of old posts about jetting, but nobody stated flat out what an ea81 (and how about ea71?) should be jetted at. anyone know what the manual sais? also i plan to compensate for altitude. i live at 5500 ft. and most of my driving is 5500 - 8000ft. there was one post that said you subtract 5 from your jetting for high elavation, another 5 for really high elevation. but that doesn't nesseccarilly make sense to me, shouldn't the air jets be bigger at high elevation? i assume a 170 is a bigger hole than 160. 4.) i think i would prefer a manual choke. easily done? 5.)anything else folks who have done this rebuild can suggest?

i think a board member WJM posted recenly abour running high compression on a turbo ea81. he's doing it, you should talk to him.

ea81 overheats in 10 mins. Help. thar she blows!
test the radiator cap. a bad cap will make a car overheat when it ought not. pray it's that simple.

Project(from Junker To Jewl)
i did a 4wd conversion on a ea81 hatch and it was easy. not quick, but relatively trouble free. no body modification required. don't take any one persons word for it, check out the tunnel on YOUR car. i guess the doability may very year to year, model to model. i think they made 4wd stds in '87, so maybe your car won't be any trouble at all. maybe you'll need to bang on it a little. if you can find a 4wd car in non running order, you could pick it up for a song, and you'ld have all you parts right there. one word of advice would be to line up a friend to help with the heavy stuff. swapping the rear end torsion bar/trailing arm assembly is a pain in the rump roast to do alone. (but ultimately you can do anything you set your mind to)

AAaargh.... Why won't it fit?!?!?
it's important that you use a torque wrench on the pressure plate bolts. i only mention this cause it sounds like you may not have put the clutch back on right.

Subaru to Nissan Differentials
you throw out too many #s there. i don't know what cars had these diffs you're talking about there. my point is that the diffs from datsun 510s are the same exact diffs as old subes minus stubs and maybe gears. or are they not? aren't the cases the same and everything? only weight differences being that of different stub and gears?

DUAL CARB 1600 help ID this engine
thanks for the tip. i talked to her today. she was very knowledgable. she said the engines were made from '77-'79 and they had a different cam than most, it was the same hi lift cam used in the FE coupes of the late '70s. (i wonder if these cams were in 1600 brats, too?) she said as far as she knew the heads were the same as all others, though. she also said i guy at burt toyota knows more about them. i'll talk to him when i can.

Project(from Junker To Jewl)
definately keep at it and prove them wrong. your car rules. and you can make it better on a shoestring budget. that's part of why it rules.

Here's to New Engines! It has Begun!
this thread is drifting off topic. let me help it drift farther off topic. i just saw in one of those auto classified mags that they sell at every respectable gas station in the u.s., someone is selling a delorean w/ low miles and in perfect shape and it's all decked out to be an exact replica of the one in back to the future. i believe the flux capacitor is clearly visibe in the photo that ran with the add. they wanted $35,000. and you know what, i say it's worth every penny. i don't think it actually can travel through time, tho. so if that were important to you, you should probobly look for the one it was modeled after.

ever wonder...
are you saying that when you "almost killed yourself" you were busting out some evasive spy tactical meneuvers? what's the story?
-
Subaru to Nissan Differentials
if they're selling, that IS what they're worth. i have a datsun 510 friend and he sais that their diffs are the exact same, the diff itself bolts right up. but i think they have to change the axel stubs or something. so we would need to do the same to use theirs?

DUAL CARB 1600 help ID this engine
i was told by the guy that owned it that the heads and cam were different, but dunno how. when i get time soon i'll take the heads off and compare them visually w/ the heads from an old std i had. i'll let y'all know what i find. i was also hoping the serial # would tell what year, but i guess it's fairly irrelavent.

VIDEO review- zapar's rubicon dvd
i watched this last night. three of the most heavily modified subarus you'll ever see take on some nutty rump roast trails. it really was pretty entertaining. the terrain ranged from "my car probobly could do that" to "no way in hell could i do that" to "how did they even get up there to try that?" these guys show you how to break things! i thought that was kind of cool. i would have liked to have seen more in depth coverage of the on trail repairs. anyone who doubts that these cars can be built to compete with serious 4x4s will be convinced. the lesson learned here is BE PREPARED! lots of on trail repairs were done but they did them and apparently made it home. one other amusing thing here is the occational ornery comment by your narrator, i'm assuming it's eric. grumpy he sounds. so if your interested in off roading subarus, it's 5 stars. tim robbins gave depth to his charactor and catherine zeta jones was wonderful as the countessa. and "the beast" is well....... i'm at a loss for words. you gotta see that thing. good work, eric. very inspiring

DUAL CARB 1600 help ID this engine
bump i guess what i really want to know is if this engine block was originally mated with the dual carb manifold. that might tell me what should be inside of it. can anyone tell anything from the serial # above?

DUAL CARB 1600 help ID this engine
well....... the same guy i got this from has at least one more, in a car that i'm considering buying. if i don't buy it or if i come across another while rumaging through his crap, i'll let you know, but i wouldn't bet on it. but you are officially first in line.
-
What Subaru Should I Buy?
i'd say it all depends on what you're looking to spend. if you can find a good '80-'84, they are arguably the most dependable, you already have one for parts (and you loved it), AND they are cheap to buy. there are a couple from that era in the denver post right now. good luck.

DUAL CARB 1600 help ID this engine
a while ago i made a great deal, $150 for a complete dual carb ea71, history unknown. today i picked it up and brought it home. i was told it had different heads and cam than your run of the mill ea71. it has carbs on it and everything! only things missing are air filter housing and a distributer. my question is can anyone tell anything from the engine serial # stamped on the block? it's NO648498. i'm wondering if this is a JDM engine? what year? the ea71 stamp is sideways towards the back, so it must be pre '80. anything y'all know about these engines should help. what differences should i look for in the heads and cam? i have a post '80 ea71 taken apart for comparison. the plan is to rebuild it and put it in my magnificent RUST FREE '80 hatch. also i assume they are hitachis, but i didn't look to make sure and it's dark out the engine is sitting in my driveway in the back uf a pick up truck, i'll look tomorrow but anyone know which model of hitachi they should be? maybe whoever won qman's manifold + carb setup would be kind enough to contact me and compare notes?
