  1. God I wish I would have payed attention when my grandpa, uncle, or dad was working on the cars instead of screwing off and getting into trouble. I feel like an idiot because if I haven't done something on a car before I have no clue, and on timing and stuff I have no clue....here goes. CEL on so I run codes, one was an EGR and the other two were both "crank angle sensor" codes. I asked a member on here if it would be worth trying to swap the distributor from an 87 gl I have for a parts car in front of my house (which I need to get rid of, anybody want it??), he said definately. I swapped the distributors. First thing I noticed was the cap on my 87 was held on by clips, the 92 was held onto the disty by two screws. Why the difference?? So I go to swap them, and then realize that the wires that run from the disty use two different harnesses. One was square to square, the other round to round.....they both have the same amount of wires (4) so I just switched the plugs from the 92 to the 87 so it will plug in. I'm pretty sure I have it on the right tooth........ So then I go to check timing, first thing I do is look at my chiltons for timing. It says on the fuel injected models to plug the green test connectors together and something else, I'm sorry, can't remeber what it said the second step was. I didn't understand what it meant anyway, so I plugged the two greens together and pulled the little rubber groment off the top of the flywheel housing...... Did I check the timing before I pulled the first disty...course not. DOn't ask me why, I can't beleive I didn't. Anyway, I am using my dads timing light....inductive I beleive it's called, it has a connection for both + and - battery post and the one that clips onto #1 wire. I aim the light at the hole and I don't see what I expect. I don't know what I expected seeing how I have never timed a car before, but I always hear people talking about degrees in timing. I pictured there being degree marks that would show up. What I saw was just a mark that would show on the flywheel as it flashed and a steel nipple that looked like to me the mark should align with. I turn my cap to make the mark align with the nipple.....it idles o-kay, a little rough but not bad at all. When I drive it though I don't have much power and as the temperature starts to climb it begins detonating. Do I have the timing all ************ed up?? I feel realy stupid but I hope some one can help me out....... Thanks in advance.
  2. Suburutex I live very close to you, 51st dr off of 132nd. 5 minutes if I take 35th to 180th.... I'll shoot you a private message in a few hours..... Thanx guys.
  3. I live in the Everett/Mill Creek area and I am looking for a reputable/honest/fair shop around town. The closer to home the better, but North Seattle/Northgate wouldn't be to far south. I am looking for someone that I can take my car into and have them see if they can figure out some of the cooling/crappy running issues it has. I am so busy right now that I just don't have time to play with it, I need to bite the bullet and pay someone..... I think I remeber seeing a shop on Aurora, around 80th or so, that always seems to have Sub's sitting out front. Anybody know anything??? Thanks a lot........ Travis
  4. Private message me, I do glass.......
  5. Thanks guys, yeah, of course it was the alternator. Swapped it off the 87' GL, 20 minutes, good as new. I know it sounds like a stupid question to some of you, and in my head I knew it was the alternator, but I just wanted to ask and make sure it wasn't something else that is common. I just don't have much experience with cars, I can turn a wrench just fine, but I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything stupid... Thanks again.
  6. So I get in my car three mornings ago and start it up. First thing I do is hit the w/s wipers to clear dew and realize they are realy going slow. Look down at my dash and realize the brake fluid light and charge (I can't remember exactly what the light said, left side of steering wheel) light are lit up. I look at the volt gauge and it's below 12v, probaly 9 or 10. As I'm watching it the gauge jumps up to normal (about 14v right??) and everything is fine. I hope it doesn't happen again and go on with my day. Next morning same thing, takes just a little longer for it to go to normal. Yesterday it didn't do it at all until the evening. I start it up and it's down around 8 or 9v's. It won't go back to normal. My wipers are slow, lights a little dim, etc etc etc...... Alternator or something else?? I have a 87gl sitting in front of my house I can scavenge off of.....what do you think?? Would the free charging system check at schucks or sears tell me?? As always, thanks a lot guys.....
  7. Where is this stuff available?? I live in Washington and neither the local Schucks or Pep Boys carried it, not that I found anyway..... Where can I pick some up.......I have heard nothing but good about it and would love to try it.
  8. I have a 92 Loyalle, so it might not help.......but, my powerbands are on the passenger side right below the resevoir for the blinker fluid. I just upgraded to the bright yellow power bands and seemed to have gained about 10 horses. Keep em tensioned right and they will be no problem for years. Check tension at the same interval you grease the muffler bearings.
  9. My car is running horrible right now. It seems to have very little power, idles rough down low, and is running hot all of a sudden. What are the symptoms of a plugged converter?
  10. Damn, is it really that easy? lol What torxx says makes me want to do them myself. Wonder if it's supposed to rain this week?
  11. Swervy, I am paying someone to do mine on Tuesday, here are my reasons.... 1. It's my only car, it can't be down for long 2. I've never removed bearings or installed them without the use of a press. (Never done it with a press either, but seen it done plenty of times ) Therefore, I don't want to experiment on something that needs to work. 3. I don't have acces to a garage......I'm not into working on cars in the dark/cold/rain. With those excuses, uhhhhhh, I mean "reasons" in mind, I decided to have a shop on 128th do it. $170 seemed reasonable to me and this shop has worked on a few freinds of mine cars and were recomended as honest, fair, and relialble.... Does this make me a Suba-puss????
  12. As soon as you have them ready to go I'll take a couple, might as well wait and order a 4wd sticker from you at the same time..... Will they be available in anything other than black?? I have deep tinted windows and a black pod, wouldn't show up to good.......
  13. Yeah, exactly. Four screws hold it in, the trim around the radio....... So, it's exactly the same as what they mount the cd players on the wall?? Thanks for the info man, much appreciated. I have been on the look out for a nice, clean, plain black, hole cut in the middle of the panel trim peice for a while....... Thanks again.....
  14. Question........ Where can I get a new trim peice or bezel for around the radio? I have two from my two wagons, and one is cut horribly oversized and looks like ************ and the other has a vertical rectangle cut into it on the right side..... Boosted84 and subarustyles, did you guys find yours anywhere or did they come with the car??? I always look at pap but those are always long gone........does a dealer have them??
  15. I'll check mine also....... Anybody have any other ideas?? Anybody know of any reputable shops in my area??
  16. hoozie- I figure can't hurt to check, right?? Mud- I have no idea how old or new, I bought the cart in November 82glf- It is the same in neutral as in gear Thanks guys.
  17. Thank you very much. Sorry if it's been asked a bunch, I can only promise I won't ask again.
  18. 1992 Subaru Loyalle, 5 speed 4wd, 1.8l injected non-turbo....... In advance I would like to appologize if this is one of those threads that has been covered a million times and I just can't find one using a search, ehhh, here goes... Since I bought this car it has made a noise coming from the front that I can only explain as a hum/vibration noise. Picture the noise 33" and up aggresive tread tires make....sorta like that. I have had a wheel bearing go out on a honda I had and it's not like that, it's not a grinding I can feel in the steering wheel, although I can feel a little in the wheel. It is constant throughout all speeds, but it definately gets louder the faster I go, freeway speeds it is very apperent. When I turn right hard it goes away......like getting on a freeway where it loops back around. Not just turning to the right, you gotta be turning pretty good, there's just a certain speed/body roll position that makes it stop. Any ideas??? I have a little time this afternoon and was going to jack up the front and see if I can wobble the front wheels......should I check the tourqe on the axle nuts?? Another question, does anybody know of a good shop in the Everett-Lynnwood area that is trust worthy?? Maybe I could let them drive it and give a diagnosis???? Any ideas appreciated, I am not dumb by any means and I am mechanicaly inclined with tools, I just have no experience working on cars.....it's like once I do it it's no problem, but I don't have any experience to know whats wrong. Thanks in advance......
  19. What about a proportioning valve?? I was telling my dad how easy it would be to swap the rear discs off my dead 87' GL and he said to ask all you subu guru's about it. Wondering if anything needs to be done or if it is a straight swap......does having discs in the back where drums were mean they are going to grab a lot harder????
  20. My 92 is doing the exact same thing all of a sudden, I am very interested to hear some replys. I just assumed it was a bad switch.....but maybe ????
  21. It's like natures cold air intake hear in Seattle last couple of days......cold temps with realativity dry air (for here in January at least). It's funny how sometimes your car is running so good and sometimes sluggish, all depending on the weather.....
