  1. A bit frustrating becuase one can't see or feel anything. In this case you have violated at least a couple of the usual rules. First never mix shocks and second remove all play and align a car after any major work. If I was young and low on cash I would try to align the car using old basic methods like tape measures and string. If I had nothing I would loosen the tie rods a turn at a time to spread the toe until I could drive it. Once in a while lowering tire pressure can help to make a diver driveable. Make sure the rear is not higher than the front as that ruins caster.
  2. Its kind of hard to tell from your post. it sounded like a blown clutch until you said it stopped. Was the engine still running? I think you need to have someone you trust who knows cars look at it in person if possible.I wonder if you live near anyone on the board?
  3. I pull them all at least a couple of times a year. I measure wear on each brake and log the measurement in the chart in that car's file. I can pretty much tell you when I am going to need to change brakes on a car months ahead.
  4. If you do a search you may find that some folks have limped by with no thermostat until they could fix it.How about just fixing the gasket on the blown side?
  5. My Insurance company had to be guided through insuring my BMW. According to them and CA DMV the model does not exist. There were only about 9,000 or so made so I can see they are not a priority. On my GTO CA DMV insists it is a Tempest. They have had since 1965 to get this right so perhaps they need a few more years. On the other hand in this case the car was registered cheaper for years so I can see not many would complain. Here you can go in person and show your reciept to prove what you paid so that is a plus. It's so time consuming that it has to be a fair amount of bucks to bother.
  6. Moab, those have not been working 100% on slightly leaking subie gaskets. The good thing I have heard is that they don't give you a false positive. When the gasket is quite bad they get easy to find on all common tests.
  7. Its up to you but if it was my car I'd change the head gaskets and check all the other usual stuff like valves and oil seperator while it was out.
  8. I am sure you tried stomping on the brake to in case it has an interlock.
  9. Run a jumper wire or a remote starter switch to the solenoid energizeing contact to test.
  10. A big 10-4 on that guy. Sometimes you even get dust on you changing a computer.
  11. Its a pain in the butt but many modern cars have piston slap. It tends to go away when warm. This is because of emissions regulations. Odds are pretty that is what you folks were hearing. If you go to Bob is the oil guy you can see my oil test where Blackstone labs says it is common and does not seem to hurt.
  12. Go to a dealer and get the glop and a sticker. Next week go to a dealer and ask if you are covered.
  13. Any chance the dealer will cover it on the extended warranty? That goes up to 100,000 miles on the head gaskets.
  14. When you hear the chattering and feel the brake pedal pulseing the ABS is working. It can't do miracles but it does make it a bit more likely to steer. One has to exercise caution on ice and begin to stop much furthur back.
  15. And it does seem that Subaru is stepping up to the plate this time.
  16. Everybody has thier favorites but I have used PBR deluxes the last few times and I quite like them. no squeak, low dust, no problem. I've fitted ceramics to a couple of cars but those belonged to friends so I don't really know the results. These are people who get a brake job when they have loud noises.
  17. It is rare for a phase 2 to blow a head gasket with an internal leak. Losing that hose could easily have done it though.
  18. Nip, a lot of folks aren't clever enough to realize that you can use an emissions sniffer here. I was at a shop here in CA where a guy had the whole dyno outfit and the old type who did not realize he could use it for that.Of course here we are quite lucky if a mechanic speaks English...
  19. Nip is more patient than I am. I'd pop off the drive belt first and if the noise stopped I would be pretty sure it was in that system.
