The ANTI-Gas mileage thread
cookie replied to LosDiosDeVerde86's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXEurope is full of diesels and I think we will hop on the bandwagon again soon. Ford may be thinking ahead with thier hybrid diesel.Last year my department alone put over 1,000,000 miles on diesels so I think they are fairly practical. Don't even ask what our 96 trains a day did. We also have another 300 or so busses operating out of another department.

The ANTI-Gas mileage thread
cookie replied to LosDiosDeVerde86's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIn the paper today Ford is showing a hybrid diesel. I just got back from an hour ride in a Honda hybrid and it is a decent little car. Dollars are not everything as using less fuel is definately good for the environment. I hope my next Subrau is a hybrid.

Forrester - Lemon or typical??
cookie replied to murphsubaru's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIt does not look like I did a very good job with the Excel spreadsheet, but I have spent over 6gs and am happier with the car all the time. I do maintain a car more than the average Joe, but the reliability I get is the tradeoff. At about 100,000 miles the question is to do major maintence and get several more years or a new car. Every month I figure I am saving a couple hundred bucks in payment and insurance right now.If you don't want a small decent handling 4wd or don't need one there are better options for you out there. No car is perfect.

Gas Mi. way down and CEL on
cookie replied to rugbyben's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThat is one I'd change. The description bank one is generic. I think the codes were designed to cover American v engines and I believe bank 1 is on the right. The front sensor has the worst job and does most of the work. It can also make a car idle funny and seem to runout of fuel. The projected life of one of these is 100,000 miles.

cookie replied to rugbyben's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXto MT I just lost 50 feet of fence in a Subaru roof strength test. It came down on the subie with no damage at all. And those guys whine about dents in parking lots. I got to know three neighbors a bit better getting the fence off the car and I will have work to do this spring. One small tree too. To Rugby, I would try an ox sensor first but perhaps some of the others will have better ideas.

The ANTI-Gas mileage thread
cookie replied to LosDiosDeVerde86's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThere is a great idea in this thread. If we just start computing our mileage in imperial gallons we will all feel much better. I just sy to myself the Subaru does everything I used my Jeep for and the Subaru is more comfortable and gets 25mpg and the Jeep got 15.

Installing new brake pads - advice?
cookie replied to Fabric8r's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXAnd the bungee cord holds it up while you clean the pistons and push them in, lube , and fit new pads.

2000 Outback leaking coolant HG?
cookie replied to Fabric8r's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI just looked back at the mileage and suzam is right, if you can afford it a water pump and reseal would save you money in the end. I know that's not always possible. I had that all done on my car at 89,000 and I hope to hit 200,000 with out it coming apart again.

2000 Outback leaking coolant HG?
cookie replied to Fabric8r's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThey have to adjust the valves and put on a timing belt to put it back together. Your only cost should be for the belt.

'98 OB purchase...maybe...help?
cookie replied to LocalHero's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXEnvy envy. Don't think that I am not considering a 2.2 for the Forester if this thing carves anytime soon. So far it just keeps slapping along only when cold. I am waiting for the results of my oil analasis to see if it has extra aluminum in it. One other thought is a new turbo block. It should have lower compression and run forever, the only thing is that I might lose fuel mileage which is not good.

'98 OB purchase...maybe...help?
cookie replied to LocalHero's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThat's about all it is I think Rich. The thing about the Forester is that over here they were only available with the 2.5. Even though I have the phase 2 2.5 it still has not been the greatest pleasure of the car requireing head gaskets and giving me the joys of piston slap.

Forester O2 sensor
cookie replied to lytnin88's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI think technically they both should be around 100,000 miles. The rear one has a much easier life as it just checks to see if the front one is doing the adjustments properly and I believe it operates in a cooler environment. On my Forester at 122,000 I have changed the front but not the rear.

'98 OB purchase...maybe...help?
cookie replied to LocalHero's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXGuys, couldn't you get an Outback Sport with a 2.2? By this I mean the smaller wagon. If I did not constantly use the larger hauling capacity of the Forester and just di things like go biking or sking where the major load can be outside I would love one of those. I had a neighbor I got talking to one day at the library who has one of those small wagons and he thought it is a 2.2. He says the smaller engine and he is not mechanical enough to know. He has had absolutely no trouble with the car and loves it.

Radiator Hoses Sucked Shut! What the...
cookie replied to RallyKeith's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXPressure would build back up and the hoses will expand. If it loses coolant it can't get it back from the expansion tank so eventually it is a problem.

I'm cheap: Mismatching Brake Pads?
cookie replied to Andyjo's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXBest luck I've had with the C clip is to put the assembly in my vice which I bought the first time I had to do brakes and struts on this car. I open the clip with a hammer and an old screwdriver that fits well. I reinstall with pliars after flattening the clip. If I try to do this with the emergency brake lever still on the car it drives me nuts. In the vice it's five minutes a side max.

rear wheell bearing replacement
cookie replied to nosajh9's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXQuite a bit these days. In the old days nearly all vehicles used the same systems but now there is alot of variation. At least on Subarus you can replace them with new bearings but they should be pressed in or use a bearing buddy. On my BMW you throw away the whole hub and the new ones come with bearing all in them. Don't ask the price.
