Gas Mi. way down and CEL on
cookie replied to rugbyben's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXDo a search on the PO 420. I don't think that one is that scarey. I just changed my front oxegen sensor to see if it goes away, but it was only coming on a few times a year so I am not sure if it is cured for a few more months.

Smell inside the car since service
cookie replied to tubbytim's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIt is also not uncommon to have a mechanic spill oil or fluids on an engine during service. Do you know exactly what they did? In most cases it burns off in a day or two.

Need advice on changing spark plugs on 2002 Outback 6 cylinder.
cookie replied to gilbertg's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXSorry you have not gotten more replies but this car and engine is so new that few of us have worked on them. Perhaps one of the folks who work at a Subie shop will have some advice later.

Rearview mirror dimming trouble
cookie replied to chr15ras's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXOh by the way, the auto dimming mirror from my BMW is in the closet in the garage and an Oldsmobile one is on the car with an adapter.

Rearview mirror dimming trouble
cookie replied to chr15ras's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXAnd it's not just Subaru. Several companies have this problem. Somtimes it seems features are just not ready for prime time. If it were mine it would get a standard mirror.

I'm cheap: Mismatching Brake Pads?
cookie replied to Andyjo's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYou might as well get some mileage out of that axle if you are going to replace it anyway. TC both my uncle and and a family friend up in Maine did the same thing you do on thier mail routes. The family friend could replace brake pads on his mail car so fast it looked like an Indy pit stop.

Hummer H3
cookie replied to PetterFan's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXCompromise with them. There is not much backset room in a Forester and the paper today had an item that says that sport utilities are not safer than smaller vehicles becuse of the roll over risk. Put forth an Outback with an H6. That way you get H into the equasion and they get a safer car with better mileage. You may get stuck with this car to go to college after all and if this was not a public forum I would expalin why an Outback is better for dating.

06 turbo gas mileage, why so low!
cookie replied to kleggo's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXAfter a couple of cars with supercharger and turbo there is a reason my Subie is not a turbo version. If gas mileage is no problem then the fun factor is way up on a turbo. If you put more air in you have to put more gas in. If you add another piece of equipment there is another system to repair. If the car is your fun car than more boost to ya!

Water pump life?
cookie replied to Martinjmpr's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXAnd just to make you feel better many folks reccomend replacement of the water pump on my BMW at 60,000 miles. This means the average Subie pump is doing better by about twice.

2000 Outback leaking coolant HG?
cookie replied to Fabric8r's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXAll the ones I have seen got two new head gaskets. I did mine way before the recall and never had a warranty and Subaru paid me back for them. Please phase one engine owners don't get your hopes up. This is for phase 2 engines only. It turns out that phase 1 engines were not actually produced by Subaru and may have been put here by space aliens. As you can imagine Subaru feels that it does not have to warranty engines produced off planet.

98' Forester "bargain"
cookie replied to nvrsadie's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWhile you have the heads off just check the valve clearance with a feeler guage. This is an old engine so I would not get too picky, but if you had one that was tight I would adjust it to prevent valves from burning. This is also time for all new seals, oil pump screw retighten, and if you have the plastic oil leaking device on the rear of the engine add a metal one. After this the car should run for several years with no problem.

06 turbo gas mileage, why so low!
cookie replied to kleggo's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXNip, don't they run the EPA tests on a dyno? That would mean you would get no wind resistance at all.

I'm cheap: Mismatching Brake Pads?
cookie replied to Andyjo's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThe trick to running slightly different compounds is to put one pad of each type on each side. That said if they are close enough it may be fine. Mailmen are known to swap just one side.

high pitched ringing/beep from engine area

high pitched ringing/beep from engine area
cookie replied to Geoff77's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXCheck the water in the radiator to be sure it is not over heating. When a car is too hot it can do a continous bleet as the boiling water hits the expansion tank. Don't just look in the expansion tank, check the radiator water too when cool. Vacum problems can bleet or a hot cat but they usually stop quick. It would be good to have this checked soon.

high pitched ringing/beep from engine area
cookie replied to Geoff77's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIs it continuous or beep beep beep? If continuous I would wonder if the car overheated.

Tire issue
cookie replied to skins's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXAnd just for fun if you got a chance....put the car on a dyno with upsized tires and regular sized. Often available power goes down a bit. You might still get around a track quicker with more grip, but a good rule of thumb is not to go any bigger than you need to.

Outback death trap?

legacy dome light

Brake job on Forester???
cookie replied to clutchcargo's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThat does seem quite early. I just did a complete job a on a Corolla with over 200,000 and this was the first time the rears had been done. But this is CA with no salt.

my 1998 subaru legacy wagon is making a subtle sound when i give gas to it
cookie replied to joey3k's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI'll let someone who has had more experience with bad CV joints answer that one. I only recall one on a different type of car and it clicked all the time. There are also heat shields that can buzz, but folks don't usualluy describe them as clicking. It's also possible that you are hearing ping or preignition, or as someone said a tappet. Since noises are tough any way I suggest you take it to an indie Subie place and let them listen. They should be able to tell you what it is and help you decide if it is something you need to repair.

Paint question....easy
cookie replied to SUBARU3's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI've had good luck with old paint if it looks good give it a shot. The only thing is that if it matched a few years ago and the car has faded a bit it may need a lightener.
