  1. Acording to my machinest, the step on this flywheel was about half way between the two specs. This flywheel came from a 88 SPFI 4WD wagon. Which seems strange since the XT6 is .815 and the EA82 is either .900 or .930 I'm not sure why two specs for the EA82. I got as far as putting the flywheel on the engine, then it rained and it still raining.....
  2. Thanks guys. Flywheel will be ready when I get off work. Project EZWagon here we go.
  3. Yeah, I got it backwards. :-\ I had a Wile E. Coyote: Genius moment. That's why I came here before I had him do the work. I figured you guys would point me back in the right direction if I was wrong.
  4. I took my flywheel down to the machinist today, and was going to have it researfaced. I told him that I was using the xt6 clutch kit, but there is .1 of an inch difference in the cup (flywheel surface to pressure plate surface) between the er27 flywheel and the ea82 flywheel. He is concerned if I have it adjusted for the xt6 clutch kit, the clutch disk will rub against the flywheel bolts as it wears down. If I don't have it adjusted, the pressure plate will be overextended and could warp the fingers. OR the clutch will feel grabby because the angles are all wrong due to the pressure plate is sitting lower on the flywheel. Anyone have some light to this dark puzzle? Thanks, Ted
  5. Can I take it home?
  6. No, I never had any problems with the struts blowing out, just the CVs. I wonder if the honda springs are sprung stiffer than I thought, since the honda's are from the front, that might have something to do with the strut blowouts. The strut is probably sitting against the max travel all the time may be damaging the seals.
  7. Mantis_Toboggan: 85 and 86 had adjustable suspensions. 87 on did not have those. My 86 had those same struts, but I never did find replacements when they wore out. Installed KYB GR-2s instead and enjoyed the extra handling on the highway and suffered the lost height while wheeling on the weekends. One thing for sure, with the suspension cranked all the way up, I went through front CVs every 3 months.
  8. When I did the conversion on my '86: engine, wiring, and ecu, y-pipe for 625 - local junkyard, 140K on the clock. adaptor plate I got from my brother for 50. The wiring I did myself - not afraid of wires. Had the flyheel redrilled by a machinest buddy for 20 Used existing tranny I then did a full maintenece on the engine (t-belts, water pump, seals, gaskets, hoses, oem t-stat, plugs, wires, and clutch) - learned the hard way to do it now and not get stranded later. I sold the car for the cost of the conversion about 2 years ago and it is still going strong. My brother did it the cheap way: 600 for a parts car (was hit) with ~175k on the clock. Adaptor plate from the board (I forget who) I did the wiring. No maintenince on the engine - just the necessary parts to get it working. It worked great untill we took it to WCSS, didn't make it home - lost the rear main seal - lost 2qts every fillup and then the timing belt broke due to a seized idler pully. Just my $.02
  9. How about.........VTECFTL Sorry, I have this strange hatred towards hondas. However, if you just want it to be unique, SUBRDAV would be a good choice.
  10. That's cool! I'd so hang that up on my office wall for all my coworkers to see!
  11. So true! BUT! I remember when Nick at Nite was playing the reruns.
  12. Ok, I'll keep my eye out for a late model WRX tranny. Thanks GD!
  13. So then, the EA Turbo FT4WD I have in my wagon will hold up to the EZ30 I plan on installing better than an EJ 5 speed I was thinking of swapping out later for better ratios?
  14. Oh, the 5-lug woes....having interesting issues with this project. The rear was easy, but the front? Oh my... Out with the old: Can you tell this poor roo hasn't been out and about in a while? Pulled it all out...drilled out the holes in the crossmember for the XT6 control arm to 15/32" and installed the control arm: I had to pull the sway bar and the steering rack out to give me enough room for the drill so I could drill out the holes for the bigger bolt. I used 2 bolts from the my parted out Sportage to bolt it to the car. All was going well till I ran into this little hiccup: Humm.. that won't do.... Oh, most definitely not! 92' Legacy springs are WAY too wide! So, a "quick" run to Tucson and found these: 95 Impreza sedan spring and Legacy strut - much better! After getting that straightened out, I attempted to install the CV axel, but it's too long! It's at full compression with the suspension at full droop. Somethin's wrong here....I checked Napa's web site, since that's where we got them from, and the part number of the half shaft I have, is the shorter of the two axles Napa lists What's odd, is the used Legacy axle we pulled from the donor car, is shorter than this one. Off to more solving of this interesting puzzle.... Well, after Perry Mason is over.
  15. Prepared the front struts and found all the missing hardware for the 5 lug swap. Took the front hubs to the machinist to have them looked at and the bearings replaced. Found both hubs were out of spec and would cause pre-mature failure of the bearings. Found bearings, ordered 2 new hubs, got one in today, and ran all over town looking for the proper seals. I got one hub assembly back, still waiting on the other. Cleaned one brake caliper I think I may have a sticking caliper assembly...gonna look into that tomorrow. Assisted with bleeding the brakes on my brother's XT6. Non subaru related: changed the tranny and transfer case fluids on my F350 - wow, what a mess that was! True2Blue: That's some serious electrical draw you will be installing. I hope you plan on putting a bigger alternator in there. I was poping 65A alternator (alternator is rated at 60A) fuses with a 900W audio system, aux lights, dual high powered electric cooling fans, and a SPFI conversion. Just lettin' ya know!
  16. Yeah, I've read the 6/7 encoder wheels Subaru uses are a challenge to get MS to sync with. The 36-2-2-2 seems better for the EJ series. As far as the fuel system, you say the EZ is a partial returnless? So, I'm guessing the fuel pump controller that Subaru has adjusts the fuel pressure by adjusting the fuel pump speed? That's interesting.....I wonder why the did that? If that is the case, I may need to have a separate fuel pressure regulator and possibly custom fuel rails. That shouldn't be too difficult.... BTW, how many codes does the EZ computer complain about all the time in your XT6? Thanks
  17. Ok, I'm planning to install an EZ30D into my 87 wagon. I would love to try an EZ30R, but funding says "Don't even think about it!" So, EZ30D will have to suffice. However, I want to use a standalone ECU so that I may squeeze every last drop of torque out of it and MegaSquirt seems to be a good place to start. Wiring is not a problem for me, but fabbing things are. :-\ However, I do have a machine shop and fabrication shop available, if I need that kind of work done. Hopefully, I will need very little. So, has any of you worked with MS? Thanks, Ted
