How to replace front cv axles

brat/brumby/284mv - track/drift build
In Aus they only came 2wd. And if you want to put 4wd in without a lift I would highly recommend getting an auto (more trans tunnel room, less cutting)

I do like those wheels... I'm so tempted to do a road going awd leone but ....:-\

negative camber
Yeah, I'm on my third set of struts in the race wagon. This time though I've cut them up and put insert struts inside, this will double the strength I am hoping. Also gone from 125mm travel to 210mm travel. I reckon I'm gonna bust some CV's come two weeks from now (race day).

negative camber
When I jumped the race wagon it bent the bottom of the struts and gave negative camber.

new wheels --> tires and lift question
Adjusting the struts up can stop the rubbing but as soon as you flex it offroad it will rub again. Lifting puts blocks above the struts and so the wheel cannot travel far enough up to rub again. So you need a body lift kit. But I agree with monstaru.. Search.......

Hahah yes but no :(
Those old fuel lines running from back to front get a little crumy and there's no filter between them and the carby. Probably shook it up with the bumps and got crap in the jets. Just feel happy that this didn't happen http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/lrc08_subaru11.jpg

rear diff upper mount - replacement?
Pull it out, fill it with silicone, let it set, put it back in.

gotta love the search forum
+1, wild cards are your friend. But I also agree google is much better and the site: function in google works great.

"your wheels are unsafe..."
I agree with this. If I were a tire business owner I wouldn't touch anything like that because the liability you have wouldn't be covered by your insurance and you'd be in s*** if anything happened

Needed picture of internals of Forester/Outback differential
Phizinza replied to Phizinza's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXSo they appear like an open diff when you turn on side of them? So this rear diff VLSD type isn't like the centre VLSD's Subaru's have because they don't have a preload tension?

Pulling apart torsion bar?
Nothing crazy like Block, but I don't drive a $500k car. Many more pictures at http://offroadingsubarus.com/lrc08.html

Sand dunning questions
If you drive easy with 5 to 10 psi in the tires then it would probably do alright. Biggest issue I think you will have is over heating. EA82's hate sand as it gives them extended hard work. I've only driven on beaches and sand dunes next to beaches so I dunno if they differ to inland dunes. But I've driven on some soft beaches even my EJ22 5sp Brat with 27x8.5R14 at 10psi had trouble with. Just gotta know when to stop I guess. Those videos: looks like that sands pretty hard vs what I'm used too.

EA81 rear torsion adjustment
This is correct

Pulling apart torsion bar?
No, just wanting to jack it up some more as after all the jumps and mud the thing sags a bit. Ended up welding some more onto the end of the adjuster bolt as I had no luck getting those splines apart (way too much rust probably). I stuck about 15mm of some random bolt on the end of the adjuster and gained a little more then 50mm extra height. It was at the point where fully adjusted up sat as the usual fully adjusted down position. Poor cars taking a beating from all these jumps.

Phizinza replied to Phizinza's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXLSD's can be Viscus LSD, Clutch LSD, Mechanical LSD or Electronic LSD. So comparing a LSD to VLSD in my mind makes no sense as a LSD can be a VLSD.

Needed picture of internals of Forester/Outback differential
Phizinza replied to Phizinza's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXViscous. I think between the side gears and the carrier there are viscous plates. Basically little oil pumps that create high pressure oil between two surfaces to gain friction.

Pulling apart torsion bar?
Any trick to this? I can't get the splines apart. Taken the swing arm bolts out, and the 12mm hex pin. But no amount of bashing is freeing it.

Phizinza replied to Phizinza's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXOk, so if that is a VLSD, then can I have a picture of a open diff? Or could you answer me this, are the side gears the same?

Phizinza replied to Phizinza's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXCheers mate, found a couple of pictures. In the bottom of this thread here http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1769174&highlight=R160 there are some pictures. I have a question if anyone is keen to answer. The pin has a cut out on just one side, why is this? To clear the stub?

4.11 5speed d/r?
Sorry I am too busy to buy, pack and ship gearboxes. They sell for about $800AUD over here and shipping at a guess would be $200 a box. You might find someone interested in shipping one over for you on OffroadingSubarus.com or AUSubarus.com. I think they were out of 98 to 02 forester but could be the later ones or might be both.

Hi, I need a picture of the inside of a Newer Forester or Outback R160 diff (the ones which clip in stubs not bolt on stubs). Cheers, Thomas

4.11 5speed d/r?
.... I'm going to reply to this. I've said this on this forum 10 or so times before but here goes again. The pinion shaft in the EA82 PT4WD gearbox is fixed to the gears on the secondary shaft and the EJ AWD box's pinion runs through that shaft. So unless you can heat treat, precision cut, weld, precision balance and heat treat again then its a no go. You can however buy a Forester gearbox from Australia with a 4.11 diff and a 1.44 low range ratio. Or buy a Liberty EJ D/R and play with pinions and gears with any manual 5sp US box to get what you want. But even that takes a little knowledge into how all the parts in a gearbox works and how to dismantle and remantle the box. Also getting the diff pretensions, preloads and backlash set right can be tricky and sometimes require some specialty tools.
