  1. No it is not lifters i know the sound of the tick of death and this is completley different sounds more like there is something loose. Oil pressure is 40.
  2. I have an 86 ea82 that i just did an engine swap on that has 98.000 miles on it. It dosent have t.o.d but the right cam is loud, kind of sounds like something is loose but the car runs great. Has anyone else ever had that kind of sound? Sounds all most like a dodge 2.2 when the rist pins get wore out, but i know its not piston slap because the sound is comming only from the right cam housing. Man i wish this board had a sound thing to it! Thanks for any help.:-\ Found out the hard way today that the noise is all most definetly the cam bearing Was on my way to work when i heard the most spine ripping screech come from right bank of engine. Idle dropped and then had no power so i got out looked at the right bank and noticed that my cam gear had rubber from the belt on it. I was only 100 yards from work so i limped it to my bosses barn and turned it off. With further inspection i noticed a lot of smoke coming from that side so i turned the engine so the marks on fly wheel lined up and noticed that both dots on the cam gears allmost faced each other so i knew the belt slipped and i know for sure that the ideler is good. That could only meen the cam its self stopped turnning for some reason thus the loud screech like an engine with no oil. So now my question is how hard is it to pull the cam with the engine in the car? Is it hard to replace the cam bearing? The next thing i need to find out is why did that bearing go? Going to dig into it this weekend Wish me luck!
  3. So far it seems like alvacado green is the rarest. Thats what i have now and have had a 79 silver wagon.
  4. I have a 86 ea82 4x4 wagon that i just put a junk yard engine in with 96.000 miles. My question is what is the diff between 4x4 carb and 2 wd carb? Been running great for last 2 weeks but just today when i go around sharp corners the engine sputters then goes back to normal. So is it because i have a 2 wd carb on that came with the engine or is it a sticky float from sitting for two years? I have ran good carb cleaner in it but still does it around corners.
  5. What about hollowed out cat and a thrush? Would that be to loud and would that give you more power?
  6. The engine i just pulled with 197.000 miles had two vacume lines. One for disty advance and one for heater control. Ran very well had more pull off the line and better high speed cruse. Now have same engine 96.000 miles with all vacume (except to air cleaner, after market) hooked up and its a dog off the line but still keeps good high speed. I allso got better fuel milage with no vacume so i plan on stripping this engine down to the two i need. Someone once told me the more vacume you can get down the carb and into the engine the more power you will have. Golf t's are allways good way to block un used lines!
  7. Today i swaped engines got every thing up and running. EA82 86 wagon. Was running fine idlle was good had small tick but it set for two years so i think it should go away engine has only 96.000 miles on it. Then i started fine tunning when ohhhnoooo! rear main seal starts gushhing oil shut down pull engine inspect oil soaked rear main and nottice that its in past being flush with the block and kind of cockeyed on the crank so off to auto parts store to get new one had to order it, will have it tommorow. So my question is should the seal be flush with the outer egde of the block or should it be in the block some what? and what is the best way of seating that seal?
  8. Down the block!!!! when i start mine at five in the morning my whole town can hear it! Oh well my other engine( with 96.000 miles on it) is finnally out of the macine shop and should be a real good clean engine after all the work i had the guy put into it. Had him do reseal new lifters , timing belts and all the hardware for them just in case. Shaved heads a little for new head gaskets, rebuilt carb and a complete flush out did everything for 200$ and i only paid 150$ for engine. Thinking about set of delta cams before i put it in since old ticky is still running ok but with the price of gas 20 mpg just isnt going to cut it at 255 a gallon. Hoping for 30 out of new engine because i drive 50 miles a day and pretty soon some state cop will pull me over and probaly give me a fine that i dont need (to many points now for stupid stuff!
  9. I got pulled over today by a local cop. He said my car was to loud that i was over 100 dcbl on his meter and wanted to know why it was so loud. I told him it is a 20 year old car with 197.000 miles on it and allmost all old subes do it. He ask why i dont fix it and i told him because it isnt broke that i could probaly get another 50.000 miles out of it. Then i told him that i was going to put another engine in it soon and he laughed and told me to have a good day and let me go! Forgot to add he was talking about the tick of death!
  10. pullers your best bet i got a flat on a trail and had to change it lugs stripped on drum so had to use hammer and chissel to break lugs. One fell inside drum couldnt get it off no way pb blaster two pound hammer tried the lug trick where you put on lugnut and pull with vise grips no go walked 10 miles to auto zone got puller for like 15 bucks and new lugs. Had drum off in like two minutes with puller. Good tool to have for back brakes to, allways carry it with me now! Goodluck
  11. I understand that, but if you have your foot more into the pedal isnt the carb putting more fuel into the engine using more fuel?
  12. What use's more gas, 4th gear at 3000 rpms 55 mph with the gas pedal barely down or 5th gear at 2800 rpms at 55 mph with the gas pedal at 1/2 down? 86 Ea 82 4x4 wagon carbed.
  13. My 86 ea82 4x4 wagon has coilover back shocks that are like old motorcycles. There is a ring around the bottom of the shock that has notches in it that ride on pegs on the shock to adjust it. You should have special wrench but i just took top mount bolts off and losend the bolt on top of shock that losend the spring then turned that ring with channel lock plyers. Of course you have to jack up car and remove wheels.Only drawback is the axles ware faster and the inside of tires in rear ware faster. The front are the same as described above thread. Have fun and rotate tires often from the front to rear, I didnt and set of tires only lasted a year. Side note it gave me an inch and a half of lift!
  14. Drove with bad boot on arizona dust roads for months with bad boot and the drove all the way to pennsylvania (2800 miles and the drove for another 6 months before i replced the axle!
  15. Today on the way home from work i hit a bump and my alt gauge went all the way up and my oil gauge went to 85.(1986 ea82 gl 4x4 wagon) Hit another bump and then it went back to normal but then for no reason my windsheild wipers came on high and i know the switch was off! looked at positive termanal on bat and it had a lot of gunk around it so i started the car wiggled the wire and it repeated what it did when i hit the bump. So i cleaned the gunk and tried it again this time everything was ok so i figured it was the gunk on the positive. But why did the winshield wipers come on when the switch was off? BOOOOOO!
  16. Drove all the way from flagstaff A.Z with 1000 pounds of stuff plus my lady, cat and dog to the pocono mountains (2800 miles) with 185.000 miles in 86 carbed sube wagon. As long as i had good run shots over the hills and mountains i kept an average of 75 mph and still got at least 20 mpg.
  17. If its carbed check the choke hoses. I had one there and because the hoses are so small its hard to find.
  18. Ahhh what a knightmare i had today. Went 4x4 ing and got a flat ten miles in the woods. Two of my lugs decided they where going to strip inside the drum on the rear of my 86 wagon. Had to chisel the two bad ones ot with a cold chisel and hammer. TOOk me hours to get them to the poit of getting wheel off . THen when i did get it off one stud fell in the drum AAAARRRRGGGG! had to take thw drum of. And of course the drum was stuck wouldn't come off no matter how much i beat it with a hammer {Yes i had the axel nut off}. Had to walk 12 miles to autoparts store and thank The great sube spirit the had pully puller that was big enough to pull drum so walked all the way back to car 2 hours later had drum of new studs and nuts installed and spare on. Well at least i didnt have to leave her there over night! Now its 7:15 and im going to eat some thing and probaly hit the sack. Moral of the story is ONLY IN A SUBE!!!!!!!!!!!!
  19. Im getting ready to do an engine swap so i would be glad to take a sample and put it in the engine i have now.Plan on doing a rebuild when i pull it so i would be the perfect guinne pig since i drive 50 + miles a day won't take me long to rack up the miles!
  20. Would it be ok to put 185/60/14 inch tires on my 90 legacy? They are used but all have equal ware.Is there any problems except maybe speedometer being off a little?
  21. Thanks for all the feed back! Going to work today same hill same RPMs 5.500 in third and no smoke. PCV replacement will be temp fix untill i get 96.000 mile engine in. So 3$ is better then 10$. I allso think it was because of an over fill of oil by 1/4 quart though i usally over fill a little because it helps keep TOD away and it leaks enough that my undecarrige will never rust(about 1 quart every two weeks is normal except when a really ride her hard) Had the roo going 90 at 45oo RPMS once but i thougt the front end was going to shake apart so i backed down. So for a 19 year old car with 192.000 miles( Still get 25 mpg) i cant complain she has been they best car i have ever owned and i hope to have her for a long time.
  22. Sorry. 86 gl ea82 carbed. Has blow buy so im thinking cracked ring.
