RX Performance Rally Car
Do It Sidewayz replied to Do It Sidewayz's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
mods: Roll Cage, which resembles a kids jungle gym. Suspension, The only thing we spent money on, it's fully custom Bilstien Chromoly Coil-overs. Exhaust, Full 2.25 inch turbo back. The only "muffler" is a hi-flo cat (mandatory) which is placed in the rear where the stock muffler is placed. Intake, K&N filter. Brakes, Brembo Rotors all round, with PBR metal master pads. The headgasket...well...i also ice race these cars, and we blow head gaskets probably twice a year. It's always cyl #3. Were looking into copper/metal gaskets right now. -
Yep. Check it out. We finished the car at 3:30 AM the morning before the rally started. We were running 11th overall out of 50 cars until the head gasket blew after 7 stages. When we called it quits, we were 11th overall and 2nd in class (national and regional rallies), and we were 3rd overall and 1st in class for the regional portion. Our class is P4. Which consisted of WRX's, Talons, and a 2.5 RS.

Stock 4WD RX Turbo Dyno Runs
Do It Sidewayz replied to Myxalplyx's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Put a good exhaust on there and crank upt he fuel pressure a bit. I had a 1988 RX that would rev to like 7,500 and still make power. your lucky you don't have the crappy 85-86 cams. they were horrible and ran out of steam at 4,500 -
Were thinking of picking up a junk car to rip the tranny out of it. The whole purpose of this is to have a spare Dual Range Tranny for our rally car. The parts car is a 1986 GL Sedan. The rally car is a 1985 RX Turbo Sedan. I've heard that the splines for the CV shafts are different.. Is this true?? Will the tranny for the parts car Bolt In to the rally car?? without changing CV Joints and stuff?

Strut Tops...replacement...
Do It Sidewayz replied to Do It Sidewayz's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
it's actually not a concern for ice racing. I'm building a 1985 Subaru RX for Performance Rallying. I'm worried about them coming apart from the beating they take while rallying. I just want to replace the Strut Tops (mounts...the rubber/metal mount with 3 bolts) I already have a custom built bilstien coil-over set-up in the works. -
i think i remember someone saying that newer style Subaru strut tops were the same as EA82 cars...is this true?? we've had 2 stock strut mounts come apart on our ice racer. Both...the rubber separated from the metal, and then ended up dropping right out the bottom and were in the fender well. I don't see people with Imprezas and wrx's having this problem. What fits?? i'm looking into getting some GC8 or Group N strut mounts. As they need to look stock on the car as were running production.

not yet. no.

We blew one ice racing this year. It was a 1987 Full Time tranny (single range) in an XT. Came out of a corner at WOT, went to shift into 3rd and got a hand full of neutral. We did end up only being able to select 2nd gear. Ended up breaking a shifer fork. This car is highly modded, full catless exhaust, intake, runs on race fuel and makes 22 PSI of boost. A friend of mine blew 2 trannies in his 1992 Loyale. He was non-turboed. Both times he blew shifter forks. he is VERY hard on trannies though. I'll let you now how the one in my rally car holds up.. it's a 1985 RX with Dual-Range. And yes..you may think that Ice Racing is easy on trannies.. hell it is ice. Well the car we blew the tranny in is a stud car. We run 150+ studs per tire. They are basically like ATV studs, but protrude from the tread 7MM. We have more grip on Ice with these tires than you could even wish for on Gravel with Gravel tires. The grip is truely insane

there are cam bolts in the rear for the trailing arms.

? Justy 5 spd 4x4 good in snow?
Do It Sidewayz replied to subiemech85's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
They are an awesome car in the snow. check out this picture http://tinypic.com/ooxl The car will turn on a dime when you ask it to. Spend a couple bucks on some decent snow tires, and it will be the best winter you've had driving. I haven't driven much that is better in the snow than the Justy. And i actually race and rally an RX Sedan. The short wheelbase of the justy just makes it awesome in the snow -
The HKS is probably one of the nicest BOV's on the market... However they also are something like 350 USD. So i'm guesing for the majority of the people wanting a BOV on their EA82T, aren't going to spend 350 on a BOV. Especially since you can do an I/C, BOV, and alot of other crap for far less money than the BOV alone
-
These cars will run FINE with a properly adjusted atomospheric BOV. You need to adjust any BOV with shims and such so that it isn't open at idle, but open to vent the boost. We have used the same set-up on a Legacy Turbo (uses a MAF sensor much like the EA82) and it worked with no problems at all. People said it could be done...Just go out and try it. On this car we replaced the stock re-circ valve with an atmospheric one We spent some more money on the BOV for the Legacy Turbo (wanted more noise) so the older Atmospheric valve got passed onto an EA82T car. Once it was properly shimmed it rean without problems, and scared the piss outta people when it vented. By "shims" you need to shim the spring. The "shims are nothing but washers to adjust the force of the spring.

TURBO JUSTY sighted?????
Do It Sidewayz replied to Hondasucks's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Correction..Justy's started life being easy on gas. Now..running as much boost as i do, it drinks pretty good. If you need it in the vaccum side of the gauge. it isn't too bad..But Boost is SOOOO addictive -

TURBO JUSTY sighted?????
Do It Sidewayz replied to Hondasucks's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well....apart from getting the turbo for free... The "kit" cost me around $200 CDN. But i did do all the work myself. I made the manifold, downpipe, intake pieces, Oil Lines, Coolant Lines... Also included in this was the Intercooler which i paid 100 bucks for It's not worth you Buying a "kit" it's simple enough to construct yourself. All you really need is a welder to weld up the exhaust. You can buy a cheap 110V Mig for a couple hundred bucks. You will end up using the thing like every week when you work on cars, so it's really a woth while investment. There isn't that much material cost in it. Maybe like 20 bucks in steel (about 3 feet of pipe and a chunk of 3/8" plate for the flanges) -
XT6 turbo...can it be done?
Do It Sidewayz replied to Subaru X's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
We are just about finished one. All we need to do is fabricated the Downpipe. We used a turbo from a 300ZX. Enrichment..yes... But remember..i fyou wanna build a turbo XT6...you'd just swap in the EA82T lower compression pistons. -
TURBO JUSTY sighted?????
Do It Sidewayz replied to Hondasucks's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
They never came turboed...... but i know of 2 in North America...I think i probably own the ONLY one that is Running right now. mine looks like this http://tinypic.com/ooxl If you know Justys at all, you will know that my body style (1988) only came Carbed. I swapped my car over to the EFI motor and everything about a year ago, and i've been turboed for about 8 months. Mine is running a EA82 turbo, with custom everything. It's running on a Greddy Emanage Fuel Management System which i tune with my laptop. I pull 8 PSI of boost, on 94 Octane pump gas. The car weighs a little under 1700 Lbs, and i'm guessing makes a little over 115hp. The Justy will ever so slightly pull on a modded Legacy Turbo which is running a JDM EJ20G engine. The car will also Slightly pull on a fairly stock WRX (one with exhaust). Only problem with my car right now, is the fancy Kevlar clutch disc, and reinforced pressure plate won't hold the power. It's one of those things you see, and comment to yourself "that thing isn't meant to be going that fast" -
So i came to a stop today....
Do It Sidewayz replied to WJM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Dude....a word of advice. Don't waste your money. You will do nothing but crack those rotors. Buy a good set of rotors (brembos) and a good set of pads. You will have no problems. I run Brembo Rotors, PBR Metal Master pads on my car and haven't had a problem, and it is rallied about once a month. -
We have been ice racing XT's, RX's, whatever with EA82T motors for about 8 years. We on average go through about 2 or 3 motors a year between about 5 cars. Your RX is probably an 88...meaning a few year newer valve springs. Your valve float won't always be in the same place depending on the engine. It great depends on who drove the car. If the engine was red-lined everyday of it's life then the valve springs will have weakened more. However if the car was an auto, and shifted at 4,000 ever day of it's life it's completely different story. BTW.. i have also go karting for about 8 years and in our kart engines, New valve springs will float at 6,500 rpm. however 3 race old springs will float at 6,100-6,200 rpm. That is a BIG difference when you can gear for 300 more RPM at the end of the longest straight.

It Does seem like you are running a tad bit lean when you come back into the power. If not lean in general. I'd really suggest that you get an EGT gauge on there, and put the probe in the pass side of the manifold, as that side is the ones that usually blow. Yes...i did say before that one of the only ways we could keep out EA82T's together was to run 45-50PSI fuel pressure, and race fuel. Without that, we run too lean/hot and end up melting away pistons. I would really look into injectors, at the very least. The problem with just adding injectors is that you are going to be running rich when you aren't under boost. For this reason you need a method of adjustment. An Apex-i SAFC or Greddy Emanage will work really well...although cost some $$$$ I just put an emanage on my Turbo Justy project, and let me tell you it's well worth it. Before i was running with very primitive fuel management controls (FPR, and a potentiometer to make the car think it was running colder and give it more fuel) With the Emanage i can add injector duty cycle ontop of what the stock ECU is doing, Advance and pull timing, then run additional injectors. I just sit there with my laptop and adjust everything realtime, or sit at my desk and adjust the maps. Right now...the justy will outrun a modded Legacy Turbo, which has an JDM Ej20G installed, with 15 PSI of boost, and full exhaust. WJM...the "soft" rev-limiter you are talking about....well hate to say it, but you are floating the valves. It will sound exactly like you are hitting a rev-limiter, but the valves will start to float and you aren't gonna make anymore rpm.

Project RX: Not Running... What went wrong?
Do It Sidewayz replied to Subarutex's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
We've actually had a car do this once. Turned out the computer totally fried itself. Seemed we plugged in a new one and it fired to life again
