My intake does that when I open the air filter housing just a tiny crack. When I open the housing the whole way, the drone goes away, and the intake makes nice sounds. Sounds to me like your air intake has a small leak somewhere. I would get out the stethoscope and try to locate the source of the sound.

Well, there's tons of wires going to the computer and all throughout the car. Look behind the driver's and passenger's footwells and see. I don't know how many of the wires from your 1.8's computer will clip right on to your 2.2's. I guess that would determine how big of a project the wiring would be.

My opinion: A manual transmission is clearly superior from a reliability standpoint. But I insist on MT's only because I find them more enjoyable to drive. Others prefer not to have to shift. They should choose automatics, with the knowledge that the auto tranny might go bad before the rest of the car.

The transmission will bolt up. However, the engine will need to bring its computer with it. That's a wiring nightmare. If the '96 body is in good shape, you should consider putting the 2WD 5mt in it. That might be easier. Either way, it's a large project. I would put it off until the 1.8L engine dies.

I'm asking because I'm trying to remove the crank pulley bolt, immobilizing the crank by putting the car in 5th and setting the P-brake. I think I put about 200ft-lbs on the breaker bar before the clutch slipped. I've got a Fenco P.O.S. clutch kit from AutoZone in there. 200ft-lbs doesn't seem like much for an engine that can make 140ish.

I'm speculating, but I bet most airbag stickers are intentionally difficult to remove, for legal and liability reasons. I think you'd have a hard time removing the sticker and having it look like there never was a sticker there. What year Subaru do you have? In 1996, they sewed a plastic sleeve (which holds highway toll tickets nicely) with the airbag warning to the visor. It's not too obtrusive. The driver's and passenger's rooflines have opposite angles, so you can't just swap the two visors. It may be more than you're willing to invest, but you could have the visors reupholstered. Or if you have a '97 or '98, you should be able to install '95 or '96 visors.

I have a '96 Brighton. I went to the junkyard and pulled the instrument cluster out of a '95 L wagon with 160k miles. I paid $40 for it. The cluster is nice and modular. All the gauges unscrew and can be replaced one at a time. The Tachometer is connected to the cluster by three screws that line up with traces labelled +, -, and TA. I'd be willing to bet your '97 gauge pod is almost identical. I can upload a photo of the '95/'96 version if you like

What EJ-series transmissions are compatible?

You do? Oh. Then here's another question about which parts might work for Al's upcoming AT->MT swap. 5MT's off cars with 21" outer radius tires are hard to find. But there are plenty of 5MT's from cars with 19" tires. Is there a way to install a driveline off a Legacy L (19" tires) on an Outback (21" tires) and have an accurate speedometer? They all have different final drive ratios, so there is no vehicle speed sensor out there that knows the correct relationship between turns of the driveshaft and distance travelled. Imprezas have a shorter wheelbase. Yet one might be able to use the tranny & diff of an Impreza and the rear driveshaft off a Legacy. Does anyone know if the transmission & diff mounting brackets are the same on the Impreza and Legacy, '95-'98? That would widen the field of potential donor cars. -
I don't care for the styling. But then I don't care for how most new cars (except sedans and coupes, which are generally reasonable) are styled. I guess it's good to see a Subaru big enough to put the H6 to use. Fold-flat seating achieved by raising the height of the floor in the cargo hold. Two questions: Is it officially a Minivan? Does it share a platform with any other vehicles, or is it based off of anything else?

Don't assume that just because I live in the U.S., I agree with our current policies or our leadership. No, actually, I fully understand Iceland not complying with Kyoto. They have a good reason not to. And unlike the U.S., they're taking innovative steps toward being green.
