  1. good question Bobby! I am looking into that my self. I have an extra block for my 82' Brat and I want to build it so it is ready to drop in at a later date. If any one has done a write up it would be very helpful.
  2. You can go on the King springs web site here in the US also. I have checked them out but did not know the stock specs of my 82' Brat springs. I don't think it would be to expensive to custom order them. Just hit King springs on a google search see what you think. I just checked again and they are all out of the country. South America is the closest. Check 'em out.
  3. Did you clean the lifters in oil fully subbmerged. If you completely cleaned all the oil out of them, they have to be re-charged of pumped up (fully subbmerged) before you re-install them. Also the oil hole in them needs to be lined up correctly so the engine can maintain the oil pressure in the lifters. I learned this the hard way and had the same type of problems you are having. I had to take it apart again to fix it. A compression check is good also but if your valves are not opening and closing right the compression could be fine but the timing would still be off.
  4. Another Idea is changing the oil evey 3000 miles. especialy if you do a lot of "stop and go" in town driving. Besides the cleaner oil may even help with gas milage. Even if it is a mile or two, they add up. If you have the non-turbo type motor you might also try a can of engine restore. I know it works great in the older motors to help re-line the cylinder walls and restore some compression. You might have to ask some of these other "new" (non EA81 or EA82) subaru owners if they have used it or not. Just a thought. Wal-mart has it for cheap.
  5. Malaga, Wa checking in! I got some of the stickiest clay you could ever get into here. Mostly in the spring with the run off and such. Also know a few good jeep trails on forest service land that open a little later in the June or so. The sigh at the begining of the road says" 4x4 only beyond this point due to high clearence requirements" or something to that effect.
  6. I get this same happening on My 82'. I have noticed that after putting on the 4" lift that my strut springs are alot tighter and they hop a little if I turn a hard subaru circle( I love the turning radius in subbies). I can usually correct the pull by turning in the opposite direction. Just a thought. The MT's will have a little bit of tilt (top leans out a little) but I have been runnig My MTs for over 15,000 mi now with only a little more than 1/32 of wear. Let me know if this helps.
  7. thanks for the info. I am finding it difficult to get a good Gen 2 topper. It is a Gen 1. 2" short on each side at the tail gate.
  8. Does anyone know the difference in canopy fitting. I have a canopy that I just picked up for My 82', but it is too narrow at the back and the front sits up over the fun tops about half way. It has a Subaru part # and is the taller canopy. I think it is for a Gen 1 and would be willing to trade for any Gen 2 plus I would kick in a few $$ to make it a fair trade. Thanks for any help.
  9. Witch turn were you on up there? Maybe the crash was not just from driving too fast. I grew-up on those roads and still drive them all the time and have slid many times because of too much sand and not driving too fast. The slope on some of those turns is not going the right way. Then again it could have been from going too fast. It has been known to happen at 4 am.
  10. I went with the toy wheels cuz I found a set of five chrome/steel ones for $15 each. They are 15x6 with 3 3/8 negative back spacing and I love 'em. I decided to drill the wheels and not the hubs since the hubs already have re-enforcement at the lug studds. I am now running 215/75/15 Hankook MT's on my 82 Brat and no problems. I finally got stuck in a 4 foot snow drift last week when I was out hunting. I've never run pug's so I guess I can't compare them.
  11. carb cleaner is a little safer than starting fluid and will be as effective. Just don't use brake cleaner it will make some toxic fumes. You may also check you MAF sensor. My Brother was having a similar problem with his '90 Legacy w/2.2L and that is what I found the problem to be. Just a thought.
  12. I checked the grounding points just by tightening and cleaning them , but will try the longer wire to the neg post. Thanks
  13. I will test the voltage output at the battery and at the alternator. By 8-10v I am going by the gauge. It drops dramatically when I turn the head lights on and actually bounces when I turn the turn signal on. As for the warning light, it goes on with the ignition and goes out when I start the car. It is good.
  14. I'm having the problem of running below 12v more like 8-10v and when I turn on the lights it drops pretty good. The alt. is new and I hve tried two others with the same thing. Checked all connections and they are good and I have full power to the battery. Do I have a short maybe some where that you all might suggest I look first. The car had an alarm system at one time before I bought it and all the crap is still under the dash. Maybe there?
  15. I might try that on my other wagon but the Brat has the a/c that still works and the bracket is not reversable. How did you change to the one wire? What mods are required to do so?
  16. I have the BYB lift from PK 4"/3" and that sits me about 12" at the rear diff. with 215/75/15 MTs. As for power I have the stock EA81 in my 82 Brat w/5spd mod and no lack of power. I often get comments from the guys with lifted trucks and jeeps (all possitive) about how well it does. We have measured clearances and I sit higher than my buddy in his 6" lifted GMC truck w/35" swampers. The only negative is the water flows in the bottom of my door sooner than his truck cause it sits higher off the ground at the door bottoms.
  17. My manual for my GL Brat says the non-guage DL has a light but that the GL is just the guage. You can check for the oil light sender right on the oil pump. Your preasure sending unit should be screwed in on the bottom and there is a large plug to the passenger side and up in line with the oil filter. This is where your switch for the light would be screwed in. ie. no switch, no oil light. Just the guage sending unit. This is how I understand it. I can't remember seeing an oil light ever lit up on any of my previous GLs. Anyone else on this Idea? Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
  18. Yea, Birth would be a pretty strange place to take a subaru. Just kidding I know what you mean. I spelled it wrong the first time too it should be Burch. Anyway Burch is some of the stickiest clay mud around. Another place is up Nahaham canyon above Cashmere. All we need is a little more moisture.
  19. I have 27.7 " tires also and i get about 22-25 with EA81 and 5spd conversion. I also have the stock carter/weber(out of tune) carb on the Brat. Did I mention the one barrel carter/weber sucks! ? What was Subaru thinking? I guess 22mpg is better than 12mpg in my Ford.
  20. I had 405,000 on my 79' GL wagon and was the original owner (ok my parents bought it new). I sold it to a co-worker for her step-daughter and it is still going at over 420,000mi. I loved that car! Had to sell it to help buy a house for the Wife and I. Maybe I can buy it back My 82 Brat has 215,000 and climbing.
  21. I had 405,000 on my 79' GL wagon and was the original owner (ok my parents bought it new). I sold it to a co-worker for her step-daughter and it is still going at over 420,000mi. I loved that car! Had to sell it to help buy a house for the Wife and I. Maybe I can buy it back
  22. If I had the room under the air cleaner and with the a/c bracket I would. I was looking at the nissan alternator cause it is only a different wiring harness and the parts house will change the pully for me for no charge. no grinding or welding involved. theoreticaly
  23. Turbone is right while you have it apart you should spend the extra couple $$. Do you have the new rad in yet? Did it fix the problem if you do? Anyway best of luck. We might have to get together and hit Birch Mt. one of these rainy days. You might remember seeing me at the E. Wenatchee safeway a couple weeks ago?
  24. What all is entailed in making the xt6 alt. fit in the ea81 w/ a/c and stock air cleaner?
