Seeing ngk's fire.. while in cyl head?
Petersubaru replied to bgd73's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Your "miss" could be related to the fact that the "platinum 4's have a spark gap of .062 and even though the platinum4 plugs can jump the gap much easier then regular copper plugs, I think a gap which is .020 larger then what is called for in a stock situation is to large for the ignitor to push the current effectively ...especially when the coil and ignitor may not be able to deliver the current as when new...also I larger gap even when new will give a slightly weaker spark ... -

Why subaru's are retired...
Petersubaru replied to zyewdall's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
to the other extreme, in my area, most, if not all of them were retired several yrs ago because of rust problems...both of my subies are from 86 and are very solid thanks to the excessive oiling to the interior and exterior around the moldings, lights,etc....it looks very messy during the winter -

I too am very happy with the wires and also a very interesting read on there website ....I ordered them over the phone...I had them slightly customized with different plug ends and longer wires especially for the coil wire...this way the wire set can become more universial for perhaps to be used on another type of car...

Please Help, Carb Still Having Issues!!!!
Petersubaru replied to jk4138's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I feel for your trouble..my friend just recently put on a new carb and we had to adjusted the choke to close it a little tighter for the cold weather start-ups (one notch over)and now it starts the way it is suppose to... and also his float had to be re-adjusted...maybe the float was changed slightly during the shipping or the rebuilder went by the book specs which doesn't always work because of the slight differences in the carb castings..fortunately we had his old carb for a reference to set the float up...the only problem remaining is when coming off the highway, the RPM's drop momentarily to near stall...this could be related to the lower compression values of 130psi ....and since the carb has been remanuf to new engine specs of 165-170 psi..thus the old engine is not pulling enough vacuum to draw the fuel out of the jet when sudden changes of vacuum occur..not sure on this, but time will tell...in the future he is going with the FI conversion -
Nonstarting issue... EA82 SPFI

it was still hot or very warm summer weather when the temp sensor would not work as described above... -
Nonstarting issue... EA82 SPFI
Petersubaru replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
could it be as simple as a temp sensor problem..4 months ago my car runs perfect and then suddenly it would not start...I try restarting the car and could not get it going...one of the pins on the connector side was so corroded that it could no longer give a tight contact for the sensor to work properly...visually everything looked good before this happened -
a good opportunity for the idle screw to be completely taken out and cleaned up

Need some advice on carb swap
Petersubaru replied to jk4138's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You could order some OE carb base gaskets from Eurospecparts.com ,,,very cheap price and much better quality then what comes with the rebuild carbs... -
finally found time to install the rear brakes and I have been driving around with this conversion for over a month now (5000mi) and all I can say is that I should have done it over 15 yrs ago...effortless too stop...the rear wheels will not lock up under wet conditions and on gravel roads which I have tried numerous times to do... so I can only assume at this time the proportioning valve works great with this set up...soon the snow will come, and I will try again to lock them up

the brush honing was done to the cylinders (that I did see them do) and the oil consumption is far less then when it was first started up...a little side note concerning the rings.. the first set of rings were from the federal mogul group and they had to be sent back because the ring gap was even larger (a total misfit of rings to cylinders)...by the way...how will you make it known when your FI project is ready with pictures and price..
-
GD.. it is good to know that the FI can make adjustments as the system wears on, unlike the carb which is set up for a stronger vacuum or air being pulled into the motor...a little history on this motor...the heads where bought thru subaru (so I am told) and together with the block have about 10,000 miles on them..so as not to make the story to long, we had to tear down the motor and replace the bearings and rings... new ones from the Nippon piston ring company useing the standard size ring ..(apparently the same ring that subaru orginally used)... the machine shop said that cylinders were only out by .001in...so the standard size seemed correct..(almost no wear at all)...I did not install the new rings, but was later informed that the new rings had a larger gap then the old ones taken out, which might give some explanation as to why it consumes the larger amount of oil
-
I am just wondering, if it is feasible for my friend to convert to FI from his EA82 carb... when checking the compression, it is about 130-135 across the board...the spark plugs burn clean and the car uses about 1 qt of oil every 1200mi of highway driving and obviously the back pressure is more present..
-
Would this problem be something to do with the float...either to high or to low...My friends car will not idle smoothly and when looking down the carb, the gas droplets are not consistently being drawn into the carb...sometimes it will stall due to the lack of fuel...reving it up or driving on the highway is no problem...also again sometimes when parked on a hill facing downward the secondary barrel will have fuel in

bostig.com has dyno results comparing a the EJ22 with another motor ...you will have to search there web site if you are not familiar with it
