  1. Well a clean up of all connectors and grounds, diconnected battery for a few hours, cleaned ECU circuit board and Crankshaft sensor and now the only code i am getting is 35 which is purge control solenoid valve, given the mess in that side of the car it's no surprise that is the problem, can I use a purge control valve from a same era rex but an sti?
  2. here is a photo of the current wastegate solenoid setup. I think the car was in an accident and it was not setup properly during repair
  3. Thats a good suggestion to check the grounds. I noticed three ground points in the engine bay which i cleaned up, is there any particular ground points related to the ECU i should check ? inside the car?
  4. in regards to the 45 and 44 i noticed the waste gate solenoid has three vacuum hoses, the bottom one is not connected to anything and I presume that this not being connected is what is causing this code. My question is what should it connect too?
  5. Hi All been awhile since I posted here, sold my ea81 wagon and bought a GF8 1994 WRX wagon (aussie model). I had some issue with the altenator light coming on so got a new one and that is now fine. In the process discovered the previous owner had removed the check engine light globe behind the dash. Now the CEL is staying on and I am getting five codes and would like some help with ideas to fix them Code 45 - Pressure sensor - was going to remove and clean solenoid with a bit of carby cleaner? Code 44 Turbo charging pressure control output signal )wastegate solenoid? - again a carby cleaner? Code 42 - Idle Switch - should I remove and clean it and clean uop throttle body Code 12 - starter signal - I replaced the main relay up under the dashboard as the previous owner had it in the car, apparently a know issue with this model Code 11- Crankshaft Position Sensor - pulled it and it has some physical damage amd ap[pear to be out of resistance specs Finally and the wierdest one Code 38 - ATCMM signal - i think this is to do with tourque control for automatics? This car is manual. This leads me to question wether the ECU is stuffed or someone tried to remap it and stuffed it. Happy to go through and check all these things but have a feeling they will still be in there when i put it all back togeteher and it will be ECU related - any comments thoughts welcome
  6. Well you can not adjust the alignment on rear ea81 very much at all, using this method could only get it to move about 1mm at most so still got 9mm toe out! Replaced the rear control arm and bush as well, so that really only leaves the torsion tube or trailing link as culprits??, not that keen on replacing the whole torsion cross member atm. The next best bet is I am going to a chassis alignment place to see what the go is, has anyone here had experience fixing such a bad rear wheel alignment ?
  7. Of course 1983 ea81 4wd wagon you guys call it a GL model, here its a touring wagon. The ones with the high roof at the back.
  8. I have just been in to take the old girl to get a heap of suspension work done before a 1600km trip to the outback. I have over the years replaced all the front bushes, inner and outer tie-rod ends, balljoints, shockers, etc, etc. It drives sweet.... except it has a constant off centre wheel. My toe and camber on the front are well within specs, but when they put it onto the wheel alignment machine the rear drivers side has a toe out of + 10.5mm, the car feels like I am driving a crab. I understand this is non adjustable but what would cause such a massive issue (the passenger side is + 1.6mm). Surely a worn bush wouldnt cause this much difference, do I need to replace a control arm, it doesnt look bent but its hard to tell by eye. The rear is in pretty good nick generally new shocks, rear discs, new bearings about 20,000km ago. I did get bogged recently amnd heard a big bang under the car and came otu the other side and I had gone over a pretty big log, thinking I damaged the arm then? any thoughts on repair appreciated.
  9. Its just my opinion but the ea81 is a really f***n reliable engine - ************ it is used regularly for light aviation duties. But that's irrelevant - Ice Racing !!!! Sick Man - love to have a black and gold trim ea81 turbo for that
  10. Hey all Well I got a strange request a few months ago from a couple that approached me at a supermarketto use the soob in their wedding, it suited the 'surfie' theme they wanted. The big day arrived and the soob looked smick had to share some photos. Ones even got the owner in it:banana:
  11. dude you can get your white steel wheels crhomed up - they look real good - check out my 84 wagon wheels they are only 13's. Getting some 14's and gonna chrome them as well:Flame:
  12. Yep Jumpy Tach = worn distributor bushings - easy fix take to auto electrician Stalling at idle = usually junk in idle fuel circuit on carby. Either try the MMO as suggested or pull carby apart clean and rebuild. Check the vacuum operation of al components and check the throttle shaft on the carby is not loose this can contribute to a changing idle. We all been here before - oh an probably not the coil either
  13. Can someone post a picture of this valve please, was about to do a rear disc on an EA81 - need that valve now
  14. Hey Mate If you really want the weber you can on the new webers get EGR connections, fuel return lines and hook the PCV through the air cleaner thereby all original anti-smog gear is on the wagon. Also though the Hitachi is a good carby and not too hard to rebuild.
  15. forgot to say temp guage to half way is normal with these cars mine is in bars and it normally sits at five bars (1/2 way) and then when stationary goes to six bars and as soon as gets to seven the thermo fan switches on. Thats about 2/3 up guage. All my ea81 been the same. You can have a secondary wired thermo fan in fact many get rid of the clutch belt driven fan and put on a electro fan. Mine has AC so only got the two thermo fans, no belt driven fan. Also in US some use an EA81 turbo dual core radiator, not seen them here in Oz but i'm sureyou could get them, not seen any need myself if cooling maintained well enough but also good idea to replace water pump if you pull the engine.
  16. Well done mate I have owned 4 EA81 vehciles now and one EA82 I know which one I prefer. The EA81 is as Phiz states bullet proof. Now I am not one to condone miracle treatments but my first EA81 had the muck in the oil, so i put in some 'chemiweld', the leak was small and a water port I then drove that car to Sydney from Adelaide via the snow and It was fine never bothered with the head gaskets and that car is still going strong! If you need to pull the engine its a great chance to do the gaskets, engine seals, oil pump seals and sump and rocker cover gaskets, plan it all in advance and it will make the job easy. I have pulled the engines many times now and I am NO mechanic, it really is piss easy (but if you a novice allow a few days to do it properly). A member called Ruby soo has an excellent writeup on it - google him. You should also get a hold of the How to Keep Your Subaru Alive Book - it is much better than the Gregorys manual (IMHO) although having all the manuals is the way to go as it helps to have a few reference sources. The you can get onto the non- neccessary but good stuff like gearbox linkages (beleive Phiz when the reverse goes it feels likes it's stuffed and is not amusing doing a three point turn with a car that wont go into reverse:grin: ) Then I strongly reccomend on an 84 car getting the bushes replaced with superpro bushings and doin your shocks and ball joints, the car will feel much nicer to drive (I used KYB shocks and they seem good and very well priced in comparison to Monroe). Then a nice exhaust to bring out the boxer sound, a new radiator depending on condition of the original one, then all the rest, it's amazing what you can find to do that doesnt really need doing! I would also reccomend the purolkator oil filters, they are larger than the repco ones which are now made in China and they really and noticeable keep the oil cleaner for longer. But mostly welcome to the USMB and sooby land don't listen to your mates friends unknown people who say why bother with a car thats 25 years old, get a new Holden, etc. - they dont and never will understand! These old cars rock are great to drive ultra reliable and addictive. I will keep my 84 touring wagon forever - bessides it's got power windows, air-con, velour seats, digital dash and a trip computer - its freakin 24 years old! pS get yourself a 36mm socket as well - there will come a day when you need it!
  17. Yeha susuki are veryn good at taking other cars and rebadging them. The swift is a Holden barina (which is really an Opel). And the suzuki ignis is a Holden cruze but with less 'stuff' - my bro says 'same platform' but it's not a Holden! maybe you mean the suzuki Baleno?
  18. Small world eh i saw that car and thought it looked cool but there was no way that my other half would have let me get it. Thanks for the tips I will look up some of those other Subarus. I love learning see and when you said REX i thought you meant the aussie nickname for the WRX. So now I not clear what a REX is or a J series for that matter. Oh well more to learn!:-\
  19. Yeah I agree never heard of or seen the Libero here in oz. Leone is a common car in oz had a coupe once, wish I still had it! What is the Justy then is that like the Fiora? Saw one of those bigger sherpas you talking about on ebay once, was yours a jap import?
  20. Oh yeah well we get nthe datsun Nissan thing goin on. Now i will stand corrected on the Libero but I have never ever seen one here, not on ebay on the streets anywhere, so if they were in Oz, they are extremely rare! Which wold make it even cooler to own one. Yeah the dual carb ea81 would be cool too, we not got them here either. Seems we exist in a subaru Black spot. Oh and to my knowledge no hatch ea81 either which I think lok cool especially that one with the body kit in the old press photos. :-\
  21. Yeah thats right no Libero or the vans here, and we got no EA81 turbo cars either!! I am spewing bout that cause turbone has got a sweet looking black ea81 turbo coupe with the gold badging and pin stripes it is soooo coool!!! Probably a reflection on our over regulated Australian society that we didnt get the mini vans or trucks. Or marketing which again makes me ponder as to why marketing boffins make these choices i mean is sherpa a more aussier appealing name them justy, Brumbies (the wild aussie horse) over brat I can see. L series over Loyale, legacy over Liberty - is that more aussie? And how do they determine what our market needs who decided on no mini vans? Why aren't we gonna get the new WRX as a sedan just the hatchbacks and why no diesel impressa here until 2009? Schweppes thinking too much about Subarus better go to bed! :-\
  22. Yeah there were heaps of micro vans in Vanuatu seem to be a hit there as well. And it is a great place for a holiday and also off shore money laundering! (ps some of the best coffee i ever had called Tanna Coffee) There were many brands of cars Some Daewoo, some chinese and Malyasian brands I have never heard of like Geely, DAMAS, Maple, Pero-dua, etc. These vans are significantly smaller than the Toyota Hi-ace and Delica Mitsubishi vans I see them here in Australia all the time, the micro vans were a definite novelty to me and I could never own a car with three diamonds on it!!!. We got a Mitsubishi factory in our town and the cars they make are a laughing stock here! When you can see a cloud of smoke you know it's an Adelaide built Mitsubishi made by some wacked out meth amphetamine junkies! I thought the micro van i saw was an 83/84 model cause my touring wagon got the dual headlights and thats an 83, the dual headlights are not limited to post 87 vehicles many of the EA81 coupes around here have the dual headlights. On another note why do Subaru call there cars different names in different spots? Brat = Brumby Loyale = L Series Sambar = Libero Estate wagon = MY Wagon Legacy = Liberty I dunno seems confusing to me ?
  23. Hey all I am a true soob goob spent a good deal of time stalking a poor taxi driver in Vanuatu when on holidays to get a photo of this subaru minin van 4wd. Naturally he thought I was mad! It was fairly rough (all the cars there are!). It was left hand drive something I not used too i presume it's about an 83 or 84 model given the dual headlights and the style of mud gaurds with the red 4Wd lettering. Anymore info would be iteresting are they in the US? Sort of want one now just for the novelty value, i mean a 4wd mini van!! Cool! Have attached picture with message
  24. I dunno guys I have an OEM idle up set up, GD ran me through the procedure to get the idle speed set when AC is on. There should be a small nut and lock nut at the rear (driver side) of the valve. You just adjust it with AC on and then lock the lock nut. Somewhere in the dim past I fixed this on my L series wagon maybe do a search for posts started by me.
  25. Gday mate Just a thought you can get a weber with the required EGR hook ups, etc to pass emissions. One of the old ones is a Double pump weber 32/36 DGV it comes i think (by memeory) from a 2.0 litre ford cortina, it has all the required stuff and looking from the top it is noticeably different top cover and other differences. And I reckon a new weber can be made to pass emissions cause you can get all the stuff eGR, etc. Just gonna cost more (of course)
