  1. That is exactly how they are here. I had a service manager at Manassas Subaru tell me to my face that I was either an idiot or a liar if I thought I had a BRAT with lift and a six cylinder. So I went back outside to the truck and drove it through the service bay on my way home. The look on that ****suckers face was priceless.
  2. Meeky, an EA81 can be pulled in under a half hour. It is just six bolts and a few hoses. Two men can lift it out and carry it around. As far as power, there are a number of routes to take. If you have free time in the next three days, in the evening, I can drop by and help you pull the engine and give you some routes on a build up. -Scott
  3. It would be nice if that were so, but out here they have more walk in sales for Outbacks, Forresters, and WRXs than they can serve at one time so they simply don't care. They will tell you "sorry we couldn't help you" and hang up the phone faster than you can blink. It is great of you guys near good dealerships to share these dealership sources, I may have to do some ordering from them.
  4. This isn't a matter of quality, it is a matter of gouging on things that nobody else has or taking advantage of people that don't know better. For example that stock rear shock that costs more than a remote adjustable Rancho RSX. Or that $80 resistor that costs 10 times the going rate for one of superior quality. I have no problem paying for quality, but don't pee on me and tell me it is raining.
  5. In addition to the disty check those plug wires and even replace them with new ones or swap over a known good set. My 300+ HP Impreza started doing exactly what you are describing. After lots of complicated trouble shooting and mixed results I was pulling the ignition coil pack to install a known good one and I discovered the terminals were corroded, something I had dismissed out of hand as being too simple.
  6. Perfect example! This is an adjustable one that you could use to set the fan step speed to be whatever you want, far fancier than stock. It costs about three times what you actually need to spend if you just replaced it with a fixed resistor! Available from http://www.mouser.com Supplier: Ohmite Category: Power Resistors Mouser Part#: 588-D12K-1K Mfgr. Part#: D12K1K0 Pricing: Qty: Price: 1 $ 8.120 25 $ 6.900 100 $ 5.680 250 $ 4.870
  7. I am not unwilling to pay for parts. I spent a grand this month alone at Summit Racing on parts for the BRAT. I am about to spend another $300 on two more RSX shocks and another fan. What I do mind is getting ripped off for parts that should be a few bucks. This last weekend I was putting the newly ported and milled heads on the ER27 and I was fine with what it cost to machine them. In the course of assembly I found the adjustment screw on my belt tensioner was seized. I figured it might be easier to run go get one than to fool with this one. So I called the dealer expecting the little $20 part to be $40 or so. $199.99 for a damn screw and spring in a housing. A blatant rip off. Just a few months ago I replaced the rubber disk that interfaces the steering arm to the rack, $80 for a part that is worth no more than $5. So I spent half the day drilling out the screw and tapping the hole for a new one, and finding a suitable new one. Naturally no parts store had one. Then there is the poor service. They ask for a VIN, I explain that the VIN on my 82 BRAT will not cover the ER27 engine that came in a 91 XT6. The surley parts clerk replies that they don't have books that go back to 1982. DAMN< The engine is from 91 so not having the 82 book is pretty much irrelavent. Do they just spout the first excuse that bubbles to the surface?
  8. Yes, the EA81 comes with both sizes, so when you order make sure you select the 8 7/8 one so it will match the 8 7/8 surface on the EA82 flywheel.
  9. Mine is mounted in the area originally used for the spare tire. My intake comes from the throttle body and snakes to the rear of the compartment. High and dry here. Here is a pic, ignore the crap stacked next to the filter I had it laying there while I was doing some work.
  10. There are two spline types and two clutch sizes to contend with in this swap (discussing only 4WD components). The two splines are 21 and 24 being EA81 and EA82 respectively. The two clutch sizes are 7 7/8 and 8 7/8 and they are spread all over the place. My combo is as follows: ER27 engine (exact same as a EA82 as far as splines and mating etc. EA81 4 spd tranny which has a 21 spline input shaft EA82 flywheel and pressure plate which have a 8 7/8 design EA81 clutch disk with a 21 spline hub Throw out bearing with EA81 sleeve size and EA82 outer size
  11. Exactly. Get the 8 7/8 inch clutch disk for the EA81 21 spline. This will go between the EA82 flywheel and pressure plate. Watch out on the throw out bearing size. My bearing on the EA81 tranny could pass through the finger hole on the EA82 flywheel. I had to muck around autozone for a throw out bearing with a bigger surface area and the center size that would fit over the EA81 tranny. Just do a quick sanity check of the throw out bearing and pressure plate.
  12. Adam, I would be interested in getting that linkage so I can compare it to mine, I am still not happy with the geometry I have on the two. I want to look at others solutions and see if I can do better. I will Email you about it. And as for the body portion of my lift, it is basicly the Hassey lift with a few mods that I added. I had to notch and plate the front to clear the ER27 and I plated the inside of the blocks to stiffen them and provide mount points for my adjustable sway bars.
  13. Those are bushwhakcers made for a Toyota 4x4. If you want a flare set, a friend of mine has a 2 inch rubber type that I am sure he will sell you as his BRAT is long since destroyed and he never had the chance to mount them.
  14. Meeky, Napa in Warrenton (about 10 min past Remington) has brake line extensions that will bolt in, take a look at my site for the details under MY BRAT MODS. The NAPA is on the main road just past the Hospital next to a burger king at the end of a car lot. There is a very Lax station near Manassas, I know the place but not the name, stop by Autozone in Warenton and ask fo chuck, tell him you are looking for a inspection station and he can tell you where it is at and the name. VA inspectors tend to fancy themselves to be badged law enforcement elites.
  15. Right, I was just talking about the wheel/tire in and of itself, proper clearance and geometry are not going to happen the situation you described.
  16. You have to crank on it harder when stopped, that is for sure, but aside of that there are no real problems.
  17. The wheel of choice for me is the U.S. Wheels 55 white spoke. It looks a bit like the Subaru white spokes and comes in the Toyota pattern with several backspace options to clear the struts. They are also pretty reasonably priced. I use a 15X12
  18. Meeky, As soon as I come out the other side of the paint booth I am all about that!
  19. Yes, get the wheel and look on the back of the box for the number, then have them order that number.
  20. The steering wheel is a Grant GT and the hub kit for it is a special order so don't even look for it on the shelf, it is a waste of time. Autozone has the setup, there are several wheels that will fit that hub.
  21. Turn up the sound and add whatever bass you speakers have. Unfortunatly the audio does not fully capture the depth of the sound but you can get the idea. www.subarubrat.com/PICS/engine.mpg PS, let me know if the link bombs.
