Can anyone help out with the wiring diagram for the 3 relays that sit on the strut? Between pushing the A/C button and the compressor solenoid is a black hole, not covered in my workshop manual. Having fixed a sticky heater bypass valve I'm now getting excited by the prospect of having cool air. Else I'm looking at adapting a climate control system from a motorcycle.
I'm getting my car ready for a long cross-country drive (mostly cosmetic things and getting it to my standards) The biggest thing I have to do to it is repair the air conditioner system. Here's the deal: I got into an accident and destroyed my condenser coil that sits in front of the radiator and all of my R-12 coolant blew out. What I want to do is get a new condenser and convert the system over to R-134a instead of pulling R-12 out of old window air conditioners at the junk yard. There is a lack of parts that I need. My uncle tells me I'll need a dryer to clean all the moisture out of the open lines. And I also need a condenser coil. The online retailer that I've been going to for parts to my car does not carry condenser coils. There are 2 at my local auto parts junkyard, what is the consensus to using junkyard aircon parts? Would it even be worth it? Are there any condenser coils from other cars that would fit in my car with little to no modification? Like how certain Nissan Maxima alternators fit? Looking online the very few retailers that do carry those coils are asking way over $100 for them. How difficult is switching an old system over to 134a? Is it reliable? I don't expect it to reach negative 40 in the car on a 120 degree day. I'd like to know how much refrigerant oil to put into my OEM compressor, and are there any brands that I should stick to? I read in another topic that NAPA sells universal 134a conversion kits so i'm probably going to do that. Anyway thanks for reading and thank you for helping me out!
A month ago, I had my AC serviced. It had no pressure and they had to add R134a plus a sealant. No other repair was done. A week ago, the AC started making a harmonic, vibrating sound. The sound occurs every minute or so once the AC has been on for a while. It lasts about 2-3 seconds. It sounds a bit like a horn or a harmonica, starting loud and then slowing fading out. The sound continues for 2-3 seconds after the car engine is turned off. It also sounds a bit like the sound you'd hear from the harmonics when a house hot water line is vibrating. The AC low pressure line reads 25psi. The car is a 2000 Subaru Legacy 4 cylinder. When it making the sound, the AC line vibrates from the compressor to the evaporator to the receiver/dryer. It's a very noticeable vibration. I can feel it with my hands. It's not possible to pinpoint the exact origin of the sound, but it's less noticeable at the compressor. It's more noticeable at the top of the engine near the air filter housing. I've removed the AC housing to see if it was vibrating, but the AC noise continued. I think the line itself is vibrating, but when I grab the line with my hand, the sound continues. Other than this noise, the AC seems to work fine. My car is a 2000 Subaru Legacy Outback wagon with 5 speed and 4 cylinder engine.
The A/C compressor on my '89 RX has started to make a groaning noise when the clutch is engaged. When the A/C is off, there is no noise. It sounds like the bearing needs lubrication. When the engine revs the groaning increases. What is the easiest way to fix this? Should I add more R12 (I don't think it was ever converted to 134 previously and I have never touched it) or is there another way to relubricate the compressor? Could it be a belt tension issue? Understandably, I would like to avoid replacing the compressor.
