I bought a carb that I thought was a used weber for $150. It arrived nicely packaged and I tore into it to inspect... Turns out it is actually an EMPI copy. I've done a fair amount of searching and it looks like the EMPI is just a chinese clone. The 2nd barel butterfly sticks and doesn't close quite right and the electric choke is over-torqued on at the mounting screws so that the bracket tabs are actually bent a little bit.

 

What do you guys think? Should I ask the seller for a discount and just rebuild the carb and use it, or not worry about it, or sell it? I know it's a deal, but we all know about how these carbs wear. The bushings are a little loose but not too bad. I think I could make it work. What value would this carb be to you if you had it?

If you bought what you thought was a mercedes, but then opened the hood and saw a KIA motor in there, would you try to get your money back.

 

Contact the person you bought it from, tell him/her you were misled, and ask for your money back. You might be out the shipping, but oh well, get your money back on this.

Yeah,man. Get your money back. Or,at least try. If you don't you'll more than likely have remorse. Besides, that price is how much I'd expect to pay for a freshly rebuilt Weber. With the problems your clone has, no way would I keep it.

Used DGV's are worth $75 to $125. Based on having rebuilt a ton of them, knowing what problems you *might* run into, etc. You can get a brand new legitimate Weber with the adaptor plate for $325. The adaptor by itself is $40, you WILL need a rebuild kit and probably a number of jets to correctly setup a used one - that's easily worth $75 in parts. $325 - $40 - $75 = $210. Then you have to figure depreciation from being a used carb - some of it's life is used up. Plus the labor to rebuild + rejet. It's not very economical in the end unless you pay ~$100 for it and you give it at least a cursory inspection first.

 

An EMPI knock off? Make the moron take it back or at least refund 50% of what you paid. Sounds like you'll at least need a throttle shaft bearing kit, rebuild kit, some jets, adaptor plate, labor, etc. I wouldn't pay more than $50 for that thing and I probably wouldn't buy it at all.

 

You got sold a bill of goods - maybe he knew - maybe he didn't. Ask him to work with you on his misrepresented item.

Thanks for your input, guys. I now see how any used carb shouldn't be sold for very much unless they're already rebuilt. This is getting pricey quick. I know what I have to do...

In defence of the carb, they aren't terrible, I ran an empi on my vw bug for a long time, but getting sold a used empi for used weber price... NOT COOL... get your money back.
