December 4, 200916 yr hi all im new here an i just got a 96 svx and i was wondering if its more common for the torque converter to go out or the whole trans assembly? also would any one happen to know if rebuild kits are avalible or where i can find rebuilt transmissions. thanks for your time.
December 4, 200916 yr This Forum http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/ is your friend. Torque converters don;t really go bad unless something inside physically breaks (metal fatigue, it does happen) and it will then grenade inside. The transmission itself is the much more common root of trouble, much more so on the SVX it seems. Lots more info on the SVX forum. Good luck with it!
December 4, 200916 yr the first thing is to buy the ATSG manual for your transmission. its a lot more useful than the factory manual, as it describes common issues and updates. they are worth every penny.
December 4, 200916 yr Author thanks for all the info guys. you can hear a rattleing coming from the converter housing and it doesnt sound as bad in neutral. it will move but only if i get it up to higher rpms. also it probebly doesnt help that it has 224,000 miles on it either.

WOW that must be a record, it sure as heck aint the original transmission. Cracked flex plate or not, the fact that it will move only at higher rpm means the tranny is fried. A common conversion is to change the tranny and rear diff with one from a legacy. nipper

If you want more info on what to get, go over to the SVX Forum.

December 5, 200916 yr Greetings from Crossville, fellow Tennessee member. Where/who did you get the SVX from?
December 7, 200916 yr Author thanks for all the info guys, i found a trans for sale for $450 in new jersy. yeah its nice to see some one from TN as well, im from knoxville. and im actualy up at wyotech right now in PA, one of my room mates graduated and said that the car would take too much money to bother with so he just gave me the car. id say its tons of luck that it happened.

December 7, 200916 yr If you want to really make the car go well, convert it to a 5 speed......they fly!
December 10, 200916 yr Author i think i would be cheaper for me to just throw another auto under it for the time being. what all would i have to do to make that swap any way?
December 10, 200916 yr Get a transmission that matches the gear ratio of the rear diff or a trans and diff that match(from the same car). Pedals, shifter and linkage, a few wires for the switches and speed sensor, clutch kit and flywheel. And the proper length bolts to secure the flywheel to the crankshaft. I don't know if the front axles are different from auto to manual, but you can cross reference the parts pretty quick to find out.
