July 12, 201015 yr Here is my GL. Just put a "new" motor in. I drove it to work today, did just fine. Went to lunch, and dammit if it didn't die pulling into wendy's parking lot. It won't restart. It will crank, and even fire up for an instant. then die. this is redonkulous. I am infuriated at it. The fuel pump is cycling more than normal. like every 2 seconds, but it's getting gas, when it jiccs out, I smell hella rich exhaust, almost as potent as lighter fluid. could it be my coil? could it be my fpr? coil is 1988 stock, FPR is autozone special just last year. here is a video of it doin its thing... lol http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfWX7T99kPw
July 12, 201015 yr HELP! which kind of GL, is that EA81 or EA82? along with Rob's FPR suggestion, i'd check for a broken timing belt and spark - those two things only take a minute. no check engine light, check the codes?
July 12, 201015 yr Pull a spark plug and check for wetness. Also pull the FPR vacuum line. If fuel pours out, or if any fuel in the line, the FPR has ruptured.
July 12, 201015 yr Author I will check the FPR. Its an 88 GL wagon 5spd d/r with a fresh 80k '86 motor in it. completely resealed. the car was down for 7 months. so i hope the sit didn't break it...
July 13, 201015 yr Author Checked the FPR. No leaking fuel. Seems good, I pinched the inlet and outlet with pliars (increase and decrease fuel pressure) and it did not run any better. On a positive note, if I let it cool down, It will run just fine again. I came back to it after lunch and it ran like a champ. It really seems to be electrical or spark related. I am stumped.
July 13, 201015 yr is this a carby or EFI ? have had very similar problem with EFI, it was a wanked out T.P. sensor, would get a good signal when cold, when hot it would hunt for a signal.
July 13, 201015 yr distributor. i've had two distributors fail on cars that sat for a long time, so that's my guess. let us know what happens.
July 14, 201015 yr After looking at your video it seems to me that the ignition system is working ok. It fires right up each time you crank it. To see if this is a fuel related problem see if you can keep the engine running by spraying short bursts of starter fluid into the intake as the engine trys to die. If that keeps the engine running then you know you have a fuel problem. Try changing the fuel filter first and if that dosen't work you may have to replace the fuel pump or the pressure regulator. Before replacing the pump the pressure should be checked to make sure it is low.
July 14, 201015 yr Since pinching the FPR inlet made no difference,I suspect the fuel pump or the power supply to it.Sounds like it may be running on residual fuel pressure.Working after cool down suggests the same.
