Wife Wrecked My 88 Subaru GL

Featured Replies

So my wife got into an accident today (shes ok) and I can't find the body parts for my loved 1988 Subaru GL 4x4 with low range in Indiana. It was just repainted last year (upsetting). I have liability car insurance since I never been in a wreck, and blue book value is low so I didn't do full coverage. Anyway I'm upset, but need to get a new car. So what is the closest car to a 1988 Subaru that is 2000 and up? Any suggestions? Outback? My wife's car is a 2006 Toyota Matrix 4x4. I'm looking for that or an Outback. MY GL got 34 MPG and I want close to that MPG. I hear these new Subaru's wont get the MPG this will because they are AWD as opposed to switching to 4x4.

Damn I will miss my 88 with the low range!

Well youll probably want to post this in the "new generation" section since its advice about a new gen.

Why are you going 2000 and up?

Why not buy another 88+ GL, Loyale?

Because in Indiana there are none because they rust. This was a Colorado car I moved with me out east. I can't even find the parts out here. I will put a thread up in the new gen.

Thanks

Oh good point, I shouldve looked at your location.

Im just used to being on the west coast with no rust  but enough about my good life.

Haha way to rub it in his face

O.p, you should try and source another one... and rust proof it.

Or move out here to the west, I would do it for Subie Love :D

I just always forget about the rust issues until someone brings it up, then Im thankful for the West Coast.

I love the West Coast. I wouldnt move east unless I HAD to (business or something) and in my "transfer" costs would be 10-15 Subarus, all rust-proofed and shopped to the east plus my living costs and stuff... But I will be keeping my rust-free scoob and be happy about it.

+1 :D

I'll never leave this fine place. :)

What panels were damaged? Got any pictures? Someone near you may have a parts car that would have what you need to get it back on the road.

Hood, passengers side fender, (BTW had to go to Detroit last year to buy the new fenders) bumper, passengers side light. Maybe slight frame damage and repaint. I don't think it's worth fixing it.... has 206k on it. The rest of the car is in great condition. But I did love the car, it was so reliable and I have a 4x4 truck. I have owned a few 4x4 trucks, this was the best 4x4 I have ever owned. After I get it out of the garage AAA had it towed to I will take pictures.

If there's nothing mechanically wrong with the car, it's worth it to fix it just so that you don't put an expensive new car through a rustbelt winter. Plus, subarus are cheaper to buy in the spring/summer.

Don't fix it like it's a new car, just get it back together enough to be legal and drive it through the winter. If anyone asks, it's your "winter beater" which is a well known thing to have a throwaway car for the salt.

We have a really cheap upulit here. Would it be worth it to you to ship you the parts? I bet we could get em to you for less than $400.00.

There are about ten in just ONE of my local P'n'P yards here in Colorado. Repair parts are plentiful, if you're willing to front the cost of having to ship them.

Real bummer on having had it get whacked....... Ban the wife from driving it or your next Sube??

Post some pics of the damaged car, I bet the people here would walk you through repairing it if you needed the advice. I know you can still get body panels from 1st Subaru over the internet, some folks here could probably be persuaded to ship.

There's a yard north of me 90 miles that has fenders for $8-12. I realize you're probably talking about more than that, but it IS a shame to have to toss it over sheetmetal.
