October 10, 201114 yr 1984 GL 4WD Wagon- CA spec, now under 49 state EA81 power with an '82 DR trans I've been at this issue for years -- So she's still sputtering under load, and i'm really, i mean REALLY bummed that she's hardly a driver- after all the recent work i've done. Done and investigated thus far: 3 seperate carb / intakes (Webered, emission-less Hitachi, and now factory spec.) timing Replacement EA81 engine with excellent compression #'s New electric fuel pump New Fuel lines Both Fuel Filters FPCU swapped with numerous spares New coil, VR, cap, plugs, wires, battery, alt Various exhaust setups Fuel tank drained, reamed, and cleaned There's definitely more that has been done. I cannot believe that i'm still having this issue. I need to resolve this, or im gonna pull my ************ing face off- Does anyone have any clear information regarding the so-called fuel sock, prefilter inside the tank? As a community, we have to figure this one out I love this wagon and am at my wits end! A part out is not what i want to do, but i need a car this winter
October 11, 201114 yr When you cleaned the tank did you look at the sock and suction tube for blockage? I didnt see any mention of exhaust work, did you check to see if the cat was plugged?
October 11, 201114 yr That's a lot of work. The fuel sock is just a little fuel resistant screen that slips over the end of the fuel line. What kind of info. are you looking for? Have you tried a different distributor? 1984 GL 4WD Wagon New coil, VR, cap, plugs, wires, battery, alt You mention a new VR. I usually take that to mean a Voltage Regulator. Do you mean internal or external VR?
October 11, 201114 yr Author I didnt see any mention of exhaust work, did you check to see if the cat was plugged?Rob, i excuse you cuz you're an old man :-p - but i mentioned above using a few different exhausts I also gutted the original cat, back when i presumed a clogged cat was the culprit. When you cleaned the tank did you look at the sock and suction tube for blockage? What is the suction tube? I didn't see a sock/screen of any sort. I reamed out the outlet tube with a pipe cleaner fastened to a thick bass guitar string. It increased the flow quite a bit- What kind of info. are you looking for? I haven't found any clarity anywhere on the webs, or my FSM, as to what the fuel sock really is, or where in the fuel tank the beast resides. By voltage regulator i meant the small cylindrical ignitor, that sits between the coil and ground. I fudged my terminology a bit there Edited October 11, 201114 yr by Greenley
October 11, 201114 yr Yup, I missed the "various exhaust setups" But in my defense, you didnt mention the cat till now :-p I'll have to take a look at the FSM to be certain, but I dont think theres a sock on the EA81's. What about the charcoal canister?
October 11, 201114 yr Author Canister is good. Replacing the fuel rails is something I should do, along with sourcing a new tank ?
March 5, 201313 yr Author An update from the dead : I dropped the fuel tank today, removed the sending unit and had a gander inside. What I saw was beautiful virgin metal, not a speck of rust inside. I filled it with water, and it flowed like a jet through every opening but the main fuel supply port- It merely dribbled out. Now I've reamed it before, and it increased flow. Not the case this time. Seems about 20% of what it should be. I'm thinking it was sabotaged somehow by the same 'woman' who thrashed the interior with bbq sauce... I dont know how, but with zero visible rust or varnish within, i am having a hard time understanding what the deal is Would an acid boil be worthwhile? Coating the tank seems pointless. Somebody shed some light on this situation so I can get this thing underway
March 5, 201313 yr Sounds like you've identified at least one problem. I don't know how you reamed the fuel supply tube, but you could try chucking up a section of new stainless steel wire rope/cable in a drill and using it to ream the heck out of it. For best results you would want a cable with an O.D. that is close to the I.D. of the pickup tube and make sure you chuck it so the rotation doesn't unravel the cable.
March 5, 201313 yr It was asked already...what about your distributor? Where's your timing set? Wheres the vacuum advance plugged in?
March 5, 201313 yr The sock filter does indeed live on the end of the main fuel supply port inside the tank. Its got an orange end. Grab whatever implements of destruction/ extraction you favor most (I used long neck needle nose pliers), take a peek inside the tank, and get that sucker outta there. You mentioned replacing fuel lines, did you replace every inch of line?. Let Sea foam briefly soak inside any unreplaced fuel line segments and force some air through them. Prime your fuel lines so your fuel pump dosent get tired. Good luck!
March 5, 201313 yr i took my 84 and drilled out the drain plug and installed a bajo bolt and line from side of 4eat gave me a 3/8 feul line right to pump inlet thiss fixed all my feul problems the line in the tank go's uphill to top of tank and back down to bottom ok for crabed car bad for ej efi car then i was able to use the stock output line as a return line. I am runing a 2.5 turbo off thiss setup no problem was easy to do other than had to buy the tap to cut threads
March 5, 201313 yr I saw but no answer from you green,Did you check disty shaft play? Also did you Blow out the Fuel Line from the Front of the car to the back w/compressed air-120PSI to see if any crap came of -IE Barbecue Sauce-That stuff is mostly sugar and you did mention EX-GF/Girl repainted the interior w/Barbecue Sauce!! Nice Girl
August 17, 201510 yr here is a picture of the fuel sock. Mine is doing the same thing. No gas is coming out of the hose that goes to the fuel pump. Should i try and tear the sock off?
