japanese ea82

Featured Replies

hi i was looking into buying a japanese ea82t for my 1987 gl-10 wagon and i was wondering if there is a difference between the american and japanese engine?

I don't think there is on the block itself. I would order the newest one they can as the last generation of cylinder heads they had were the best. Like 88-90 ish.

If I remember right, on the bottom of each head, there will be 3 slashes/lines stating that they are the 3rd gen Turbo Heads.

you know I've never even looked to see which I have...

I bet I got gen1 on the 86 and gen 2 or 3 on the 88... now I am curious and will have to look...

@jonruff is your 87 an 87 or an 87.5?

Sounds similar to what I remember.

I recall gen 1 just being EA82, GEN2 has a Square around this, and gen 3 might be the lines.

Gen 1 - EA82 (Alone, those came in the earlier Engines)

Gen 2 - EA82 (underlined, those came on the newer engines)

Gen 3 - [EA82] (inside a Box)

The third gen of heads did Never came stock on any engine, those were improved -reinforced- heads only available at the dealer

Kind Regards.

mispelled word

The 3rd gen heads with the box around the EA82 never came stock? My 91 Loyale has them and it only had 63,000mi on it when I bought it.

Mine has the Box aswell. Hmm.

Three Different Heads for the EA82, that came marked as Follow:

Gen 1 - EA82 (Alone, those came in the earlier Engines)

Gen 2 - EA82 (underlined, those came on the newer engines)

Gen 3 - [EA82] (inside a Box)

Our local Subaru Dealer told us (My Father and I) when we purchased the New Heads Long Years Ago, that those (Third Gen ones) Never came Stock, those were improved Replacement Heads, also some other USMB Members said the Same here...

... Gen 3 heads btw, were not put into any production vehicle to my knowledge. ...

gen 3 heads were only installed in at dealer ships no car came with them from the factory thus why they're uber rare

...And as far as Gen 3 heads, there's nothing different about their fitment, but they are almost impossible to find as they were only availible from the dealer after EA82T production had ceased.

Here, Some explanation on the Heads:

http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=15437

...the Gen3 heads have wider valve spacing in the head, which helps reduce the cracks that appear between the seats. They also have thicker casting in the exhaust port area, where these heads are notorious for cracking and leaking coolant. Generally speaking, they are an overall better casting of the same head.

Maybe your Subie got Newer Heads at some Point, or are you Completely Sure that those are the Stock ones?

Kind Regards.

But I've Never paid attention to the Heads on the EA82's with Spider Manyfolds... (I've seen very Few of those here) ...Maybe those came with the Boxed Letters?

Does anybody has a Picture of the Spider intaked EA82's Heads to post here?

Sorry for Hijack the thread...

Kind Regards.

JesZek is correct, I just took a good look at my '92 SPFI EA82 heads. Their indeed Gen 2 heads (Underlined EA82)

The MPFI EA82s might be different?

Multi-port and Single-port are different castings. MPFI heads did not have the boxed EA82 symbol till after they stopped making the EA82T - 1990 was the last year that used the multi-port castings and thus no EA82T was equipped with gen-3 heads from the factory.

Cool, thanks guys. Sorry to the OP. It is nice to know about these heads though. It explains a few things from my rebuild of this engine.

zukiru it came out in 07/87 im not sure if that makes it an 87.5?

They changed the intake manifold for 87.5. The new one is better but requires some wiring if you have the older model.

7/87 could go either way.
