March 27, 201313 yr what do i need to turn my 90 legacy l fwd to an awd i went to the junkyard saw a beautiful awd 5 spd parts car...
March 27, 201313 yr You'll need transmission, front axles, driveshaft, rear: subframe, diff, axles, and hubs. It would be a fairly involved conversion, but not impossible. Just bolt on bolt off stuff. And I don't know if a fwd legacy has a carrier bearing support, you may have to weld one to your car. The FWD gl doesn't have it. Edited March 27, 201313 yr by 987687
March 27, 201313 yr you also need the TCU to control the transfer clutch. i don't know if adding a AWD TCU will do it. when swapping back the other way in the later 90s, you always end up with a TCU trouble code. the TCU is look for the rear speed sensor. and i have heard it suggested that the harness tells the TCU / ECU if the car is FWD or AWD. not sure. but regardless, in addition to the hardware you need the brain to control it. you may also need the gas tank, not sure if they are different. much easier to put your engine into the AWD car.
March 27, 201313 yr He said 5speed, so it doesn't need a TCU, your left foot and right hand are the TCU
March 27, 201313 yr Fuel tank will be needed as well... One of our forum mods has done it, Legacy777 here is his web page with the write up http://www.surrealmirage.com/subaru/swap/swap.html
March 27, 201313 yr Yeah, my write-up has a lot of details. If you are not converting from AT to MT or if you're already MT, just ignore the MT section of the swap. If you have questions, just post.
March 30, 201313 yr Are the front axles interchangeable? I had read on here that the FWD axles had a different spline count. If its only different on the engine side I guess it wouldn't matter. I wish my car was AWD. I thought about converting it, but at this point I'd be better off getting another car. Edited March 30, 201313 yr by 14D
March 30, 201313 yr only the fwd impreza used different axles. as long as you're talking legacy they are the same
