April 18, 200421 yr well this morning when i went and started my car to go to work it sounded as if the lifters where tapping again. then after a few minutes it went away. but when i jumped onto teh freeway like usual, taking the rpms up to about 5k each shift to get up to speed it sounds like metal to metal contact, like a rod knock. but what is weird is that at idle sitting in neutral i will rev it up or slowy increace the rpms and hold it at the same rpms and i cant hear it knocking. so im kinda thinkin its my tranny because it has also started to squeek when the clutch pedal is out all the way, and it slips bar doing into each gear when i get on it. can someone help me track this down, i got a spare EA82 engine, but i dont know the condition, and i cant really take the time to put it in since it is my only car i am insured on. also i was saving that ea82 for my brat i might get soon. Thanks, Shean
April 18, 200421 yr Don't save the EA82 for a Brat - you want an EA81 for a Brat. Simpler, and more reliable.... GD
April 18, 200421 yr Author Don't save the EA82 for a Brat - you want an EA81 for a Brat. Simpler, and more reliable.... GD i was thinking of doing so, but i dont have a spare EA81 around, so thats why i was going to go with the EA82, but also i have the weber so i was kinda thinking of EA81 weberized.
April 18, 200421 yr Sounds more like a poorly adjusted or worn out clutch(without hearing it). Try to adjust the clutch to see if the squeal goes away. If it doesn't it's time for a new clutch.
April 19, 200421 yr Author ya, but can you guys help me try to figure out what the knocking is?? if it is a rod knock then ill rebuild my eatra EA82 and swap them.
April 19, 200421 yr Exhaust leaks can sometimes sounds like a knock. And they especially like to sound nasty under load.... GD
April 19, 200421 yr Author i wasnt sure if it might be an exhaust leak, but ill have to check that now. but what about ticking on start up. could that be that pressure relife spring in the heads? because i just finished resealing the oil pump and all that. Shean
April 19, 200421 yr Did you check out the pump carefully before putting it back in? Often the EA82 pumps seem to need replacing, and even a reseal doesn't give them enough pressure.... not sure on this "spring" - never heard of that one before caboobaroo brought it up. I've only ever heard of dirty lifters or bad oil pressure causing the ticking. GD
April 19, 200421 yr Author well when crusing around the highway at 3k i have about 40psi, and when i start it up it goes up to about 65psi. also i inspected the pump and it looked to be in perfect condition, no scratches or gauling. Shean
April 19, 200421 yr I wish I could tell you what is normal for an EA82. The last EA81 I resealed was pegged at startup (over 75), and after warm up will idle at 50. Down the freeway is pretty close to pegged too.... but again these are EA81 numbers, so maybe not so useful.... GD
April 19, 200421 yr My manual says the oil pressure spec for the EA82 is 43lb @ 5000rpm, so apparently the EA82 is a fairly low pressure engine. Gary
April 19, 200421 yr Probably why they have so many lifter ticking problems. You never hear of an EA81 hydro ticking.... GD
