92 Legacy Alternator on a 97 Legacy Outback

Featured Replies

I've got a 97 Legacy Outback that needs an alternator, and I just so happened to have an Extra 92 Legacy Alternator. The positive plug ins are different but everything else matches up so I'm going out on a limb and assuming the 92 Alternator will work for the 97. Is there a way to make these plugs compatible?

Yes you can you just need to hook the BY wire to where the Bw wire would have been on the 92

White wire in the connector hooks to where the Yellow wire would have been on the 92.

Should be able to find a terminal diagrahm somewhere.

I have done it the other way. I made jumper wires with female spades to cross pins to the right wire as the plugs themselves were different. The alternator will bolt in the same.

If it works it works, but just FYI, a remanufactured alternator for that car from Subaru is only about $70.

You may also want to keep in mind that an alternator for a first gen legacy is 70 amps and the one for a 97 Outback is rated at 100 or 105 amps.

be nice to make a converter like thing or use non-permanent so you can "go back" if you ever need to?
