Gears grinding?

Featured Replies

Hi got my trans in and car in the road but now when I downshift into second it grinds the gears and into first. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

They have a 1st gear lockout, so that you don't over rev the engine by downshifting, the solution is to synchronize the rpms with your speed and it should pop right in no problem. (With my car it's about 3000 rpms at 15 mph)

Any grinding when down shifting is usually due to worn synchros - this means the gearbox has been well used or the previous owner doesn't use the clutch properly.

Rev matching is the best way to avoid this as a gearbox rebuild really isn't worth while unless you know what you're doing/own a gearbox specialist workshop...

Cheers

What is the transmission? AWD Manual, FWD Manual (TM70F)? The number will be on the transmission side of the bell housing where the trans meets the engine.  If it is a manual, it should be TM something.

I've found that 1800-2200 rpm is the ideal zone for gear changes. Unless I use the clutch, that is ;-) Then I can go a lot higher.

I would check the clutch cable adjustment first. If that is good and you still get grinding try Redline MT90 transmission oil.
