FWD EA82 5-speed, ER27 powering it

Featured Replies

Title asks the question. Will it worK?

Friend of my Son, Christopher, is wanting to build a dune buggy. Looking for engine/trans combo to start with.

Christopher mentioned the stuff I have here, and told me the guys eyes "lit up" with the mention of the ER27's I have.

I also have an EA82 FWD 5-speed here, which would be a nice one for a rear drive buggy.

But,,,,, will it stand up to the ER27?

Thinking a buggy would be light enough that one would spin the tires before any rear power/torque would damage the trans.

well, considering I have no flat six experience my words may be worth squat but, think of the EA82T FWD - same box internals as NA, just they had 25 spline all the way through from outside stubs to diff components. The ER was not that much more torquey than EA82T was it ?

I agree with your wheel slip saving feature for the box internals

I am pretty sure that KingBobDole on here and the XT forum has an XT (aka the "Cheese Wedge") with an EZ30 and a FWD trans.

XT6 is only 145 hp, i wouldn't worry about it.

yep - kingbobdole has exactly what he said for years - a FWD MT XT6 with an extra 85 hp from an EZ30.  he has it well documented with clutch comments over on subaruxt.com where he will readily reply if you post there.

Thanks for the info.

Kinda forgot about the "Cheese Wedge". Haven't visited the XT site much of late.

Figured it would work, just wanted some assurance for they guy, should he decide to do it.

It'll work just fine, but I wouldn't bother personally. ER27 parts are scarce to say the least and the HP gain will be minimal. You'll need the ECU and harness from a donor car which I'm sure you already know. lol You generally want high revving motors for buggies unless you just build a torque monster. The ER is neither of these. It would be cool to put one in just because, and if you have more than one then he'd have a spare. IMO, there are better Subie engines to start with.

i think Phil did play with some clutches or have some slipping...i don't know for sure, might want to find his existing threads about the clutch.

I'd be go EG33 from an SVX over an ER27. DOHC, bigger capacity, can put a FWD Legacy trans behind it which share the front diff with rally turbo 4wd subies (and hence can get an LSD for it later if you wish).

EZ30 would be better again, but newer, & hence more $$$$
