low fuel warning light doesnt work anymore

Featured Replies

on my MY88 RX Coupe the low fuel warning light doesnt work anymore.

Does anyone know if theres a extra switch ore something for that light?

It is run by a thermistor in the fuel tank at the bottom of the sending unit. The fuel covering it keeps it cool and it has high resistance so no current flow. When the level drops below the thermistor, it heats up and resistance goes down. Current then flows and the light comes on. You need to determine if the light or the thermistor is bad. Use the schematics and apply proper power/gnd to the feed circuit of the light and see if it comes on. If it does, you'll have to drop the tank and pull the sender. The thermistor can be replaced if you're fairly handy and can find the proper rating.

So if the light is on constantly it's probably the thermistor in the tank?

You shouldn't need to drop the tank. There's an access plate through the rear floor of the car (though this might be different for the coupe). Lift the carpet & check for a small access panel near the right side.

Does the coupe have small pockets down the sides, lower than the boot floor? Cos the wiring comes into the car from behind a small metal guard screwed into the right side one of these.

I wonder Why Nobody suggested yet that such "no Light" issue,

could be caused Also by a Burnt T-5 Bulb on the instrument Cluster...

Kind Regards.

That doesn't work on my '88 Wagon either. Haven't looked for cause yet.

Good info in here.

Do know, that all of the BRAT's I owned had this issue.

Found the connectors for the sending unit wiring to be corroded, easy repair.

When I dropped the fairly new tank out of the '92 parts Wagon, I found one of the wires had broken off the sending unit.
