Engine Fan Always on? Help please.

Hi. I have a 1993 Subaru Loyale 1.8L SPFI ea82n/a. The fan in the picture is always on. Is this correct? If you are standing in front of the car, the fan is located somewhat driver side of center. I believe it's a belt driven fan? Not sure. But if the car is on, the fan is always on. I'm wondering if this is correct and if it is not correct, what should I do to fix it? So my old loyale did the same thing. I think its a clutch driven fan and when the clutch wears out its just on all the time. It actually helped me out for a while when my thermoswitch fan was bad and the electric fan wasn't kicking on. But it never caused me any problems. I see your on the coast just about to head that way for mushroom festival in yachats!

 

Maybe others here will suggest otherwise but I wouldn't worry about it!

Hey thanks! Where exactly is the electric fan? I can't seem to find mine? Or would it be WIERD for absence in mine? I always wondered about the clutch fan that always keeps running, thanks! It bothered me for a while because I always seem to think my engine was over cooling? On the temp gauge it would not reach halfway, maybe barely above 1/4th. I I have. 180 degree t stat in there as well.

The electric fan should be mounted onto the radiator and does not have a belt attached to it. You should see wires coming off it that go into a plug in the side of the radiator. The is all on your left from the perspective of opening the hood. Mine always barely reached 1/4th on the temp guage too. 

That fan is always spinning when the engine is on. It's attached to the water pump which is turning, so how could it not spin?

there is a viscous liquid inside which determines whether the fan is free spinning or got load on it.

 

All cars should have an electric fan, it was the other fan that was only fitted to cars with aircon.

The electric fan is mounted on the passenger side of the radiator.

The main fan is more driver's side, mounted on the water pump with a viscous clutch.

At least on EA82 SPFI 4WD wagons.

Assuming the gauge is working, I'm pretty sure that is a good thing. Mine sits about there as well while driving around town. (I also have the 180 t-stat and a fan that comes on at 185).

The pic you posted shows that the electric fan is missing. It's been removed for what ever reason.

 

As far as the temp gage reading, if it always runs at that reading, then that is normal for your vehicle. Wouldn't worry to much about it unless it suddenly starts reading higher up on gage.

 

My '88 Wagon has had 3 different engines in it, using the same engine harness and temp sensor. Each of the engines ran at different readings on the gage.

Yes the electric fan has been removed for whatever reason by the previous owner, I found the electrical harness plug that it would plug into and the place where it was "mounted." Would anyone deem it necessary to me installing a electric fan since this one is gone? The engine runs great, heater works awesome, engine temp gauge is spot on, might even be running a little bit cooler than most according to the temp gauge which I am fine with. I live in a cooler very wet climate area. Yes or no on getting a electric fan? How necessary? Thanks again for all the replies and knowledge everyone!

no need to install an electric fan if your temp guage reads cool.... and you live on the Oregon Coast for the rest of your life... ha!

   Save your money for wiper blades !     Change your antifreeze/anticorrosion every 2 or 3 years ... Radiators love it.

Only reason for the electric fan was for A/C equipped cars, which yours is.

So you would only need to install an electric fan if you decide to get the A/C working again.

my problem is the opposite, electric fan (doesnt work not even stock to the car), but no clutch fan. so youre saying that it keeps yours pretty cool? 

I think tomrhere had it backwards in terms of what car got which fans.

Here, where it's mostly hot and dry, all the cars got an electric fan, it was only those with air-conditioning that also got the clutch fan. The aircon also patched onto the electric fan to bypass the temp sensor and be on permanently while the aircon was running

AK Aaron,  so you only have the one electric fan?   And it does not work?

  It could be a faulty thermosensor (mounted into passenger side of radiator).   This thermosensor completes the ground when water temp reaches 190 ... thus powering the electric fan.
