EA71 Dual Carb questions....

Featured Replies

Are the heads or cam for the dual carb engines different from the single carb? Any way to tell them apart?

Aparently not.I recently got my D/C set up and my guess was if the intake stays the same there's probably no need for a different head. It's just a question of more flow.I don't think there's a need to change compression or valve timing.

All just opinion here.I asked my local guru with over 25 years as a Subaru tech, and he feels it's a bolt on upgrade and does not require different heads/or compression. He's only seen one and it was over 20 years ago. They are very hard to find,as you know, but especially hard to find up here. The west coast has way more JDM parts floating around from the late 70's/early 80's.

I'll be putting mine of later in the summer. If you do your first please keep in touch.

I know that my ea81 dual carbs does have a different cam/valves/heads - it has a 9.5 cr ratio (due to bigger valves), an hotter cam and a dual exhaust ports all stock from factory!

I don't know about the ea71 setup BUT I do know a few guys that did the swap over a regular stock ea71 without modifing the heads! I did see one of those engines on a dune buggy and it was a screemer! if you guys want I can try ask the guy about this swap and maybe even take some pics of it

i was told that the jdm motor had different heads and cam. i can't notice a difference in my heads, and i haven't cracked the block yet to look at the cam.

I know the SRX had dual carbs a hotter cam rear discs 9.5:1 compression bigger ea81 valves, but most late ea71s had the bigger valves..but other than that the manifolds are a direct swap between ea71s..It's a puny manifold and the carbs are tiny..so be warned..

Thanks for the info!!

Mine look to be decent size also.I might give the project to another Subaru old timer I know if he'll barter with me.I just don't have the time lately but this post has got me anxious.

I think it demands that I show up at a drive in car show-off night with the hood off when it's done.

Thanks for all the input. I have the engine that came with the dual carb Brat but I'm not certain it's original. I'll pull the heads and check the valve size...
