June 22, 20169 yr So I found out today my timing belt is broke. Is it going to be just a belt replacement to get it going again or did it cause more damage when it broke while driving it?
June 22, 20169 yr 1994 2.2L n/a is non-interference, no piston/valve interference, and being an sohc no intake-exhaust valve interference possible. Assuming it broke just because the belt was old then that should be pretty simple. If an idler seized up or failed or something like that it might be slightly more involved. Make sure to get the crank pulley bolt gut-en-tight so it doesn't loosen up and hog out the keyway. Edited June 22, 20169 yr by porcupine73
June 22, 20169 yr Broke the belt on my 95, 2.2, same motor as yours. As porcupine 73 wrote, no engine damage. Simply replace the belt for sure, maybe the idlers, and pulleys, and you are good to go.
June 23, 20169 yr x2. You'll save yourself a repeat failure down the road by replacing the idlers and sprocket. Ebay kits go for about $75. Tensioner and water pump are not a bad idea but I treat them as more optional depending on condition and mileage. Good motor. Sounds like it will be back on the road soon.
June 26, 20169 yr Definitely save yourself unwanted trouble in 20,000 to 40,000 miles and replace the water pump when you do all the other pulleys and belt!
June 27, 20169 yr You should be good. Mine slipped some teeth and kept trying to start it thankfully I didn't mess anything up. Make sure to get the gates kits it's was fair priced and good quality
