94 dual range swap!

Featured Replies

Ok so I recently bought a parts car (86 gl wagon) with a dual range transmission I plan on putting in my 94 loyale. From what I've read so far it's pretty much a straight bolt up? Do I need to use the rear diff out of the gl? Or are the rear diff gear ratios the same? I know I might have to splice on to the wiring harness.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

You may need to swap the diff. Have to look up final drive ratios in both service manuals. Or swap it, and see what happens. If it's not matched it will be obvious. Don't run in 4wd if it's not matched.

You should be good to go. The ratios should both be 3.9.  I have done several D/R swaps recently and they fit/work great. Some details need to be sorted out with the trans wiring harnesses but they're minor.

Thanks everyone! Just got it all buttoned up. Took me about 4 hours. I didn't have to splice in to any wires, I was able to unplug them further back and then the dual range harness plugged right in. Reverse lights work and 4wd indicator comes on the dash. All I need is some new manifold gaskets, tried putting back togeather with the old ones leaked pretty bad. Can't wait to take it out and play around a little!

After I switched transmissions I got a code 51. Neutral switch continuously in the on position? Anyone think of anything I could of missed

my CEL also turned on after I did my d/r swap. I'm thinking it was the two vacuum lines that controlled the push button 4wd. I didn't know what to do with those lines

I just plugged them. I wasn't really sure what to do with them either. I'm also experiencing a really low idle. Like 2-300rpm before I swapped it it idles around 6-700 rpm. Not really sure where that came from. I looked all over for a vaccum line or something I may have knocked off but couldnt find anything.

The vacuum lines can be plugged. I'll have to look up what I did to make all the lights, NSS, etc working.
