September 16, 20178 yr Hey fellas, my girl has a 1995 ej22 (in an 86 GL ) :-) Well the cylinder head needs to be replaced due to a stripped spark plug thread. My question is, it's the passengerside head and i have a 92 ej22 that i can take the head off of. There can't be any reason i can't use a 90-94 head am i right?
September 16, 20178 yr 90-95 ej22 heads are all the same, dual port hla. Except for 95 automatic driver's side head will be tapped for egr, which doesn't matter in your case but someone would have corrected me on that. Edited September 16, 20178 yr by 86BRATMAN
September 16, 20178 yr Yes a thread insert is going to be a much better option. And they're just as reliable (provided it gets done properly etc) But you can't just you a regular helicoil. They make special helicoils for sparkplugs. They get stacked in place to prevent them from coming out.
September 16, 20178 yr Repair the spark plug threads. swapping heads is like tearing drywall and studs out of a wall to repaint. There are also special spark plug solutions but I doubt anyone would go that route.
September 16, 20178 yr Author I do plan on trying to use a thread chaser first, i haven't had a chance to look yet but she told me that the spark plug blew itself out of the head.
September 16, 20178 yr They make a special kit to redo plugs. Go to your local auto store. IIRC the kit is $20-25. All you will need is a heavy grease to hold the cuttings (explained in kit) O.
September 17, 20178 yr Cam profiles changed in 95. The rockers are roller follower instead of solid. So the Cam needs to stay matched. so you will want to swap over the cam, and rockers from the current engine onto the older head. If you go that route and the thread insert doesn't work.
