August 30, 20196 yr Just bought my first Subaru Outback excited to have it ! It has 190000 miles on it , I was diagnosing the torque bind. I put a fuse in fwd. holder , I backed up literally like 10 ft and loud clunk lound grinding noises coming from underneath. ! I shut car off pulled fuse. Now I don’t have park ! It rolls in park. And everything still shifts fine but I start driving past 35 miles an hour and the speedo jumps to almost 90 miles per hour and rpm goes to 6000 ! I’m lost.
August 30, 20196 yr Author The drivers side is definitely dislodged from diff side , I ll be taking it apart tomorrow
August 30, 20196 yr Author It was fine was late when looked last night drivers cv axle seems fine have front end of car off the ground both tires spin freely I'm at a loss ? Is my front diff pooched ?
August 30, 20196 yr Jack the front end up, spin the tire, and watch the different parts of the CV axle (Inner and outer joints, shaft, boots) and see if they all spin together. Could be a front diff, but FAR more likely that it's one of the axles. Also, do not drive it like this. The engine revving up is a result of the transfer clutch slipping, it is not designed to take 100% of the load 100% of the time.
August 30, 20196 yr Author I ll clarify just the gauge needle goes up the actual engine is only at like 3000 rpm Edited August 30, 20196 yr by Newsubie
August 30, 20196 yr Author Both cv axles seem to be spinning just fine and together obviously opposite each other , when I rotate the tire on drivers side forward the opposite goes backwards
August 30, 20196 yr Author Diff fluid clean very very small flakes like just a couple shimmery pieces less then grain of pepper I'd say nothing
August 30, 20196 yr Author Well both cv ax8 are out and appear to be just fine splines are fine on both wheel bearings and shafts please help
August 30, 20196 yr original transmission? there was a recall for broken parking pawls - but starting in 2001 I think. mightbe time to check car-part.com for a trans.... Edited August 30, 20196 yr by 1 Lucky Texan
August 30, 20196 yr Author Ya original I’m sure. ! But doesn’t explain the speedo and Tom jumping now
August 31, 20196 yr Often times precise auto transmission failure modes aren’t explained, they’re complicated systems. Theres a small gear in the passenger side of the front diff that drives the Speedometer sensor. It sounds like: A: that small gear or associated components are compromised. B: the shaft that passes from the trans to the front diff has clearance issues resulting from whatever is causing your other issues and it’s also causing problems in the front diff.

And you said the axle was popped out of the diff......well, that would cause everything you described. 20 hours ago, Newsubie said: Technically the vehicle should be in park. But the diff still spins No, the spider gears in the diff still spin. that's normal. You can't test if the ring and drive pinion are spinning with both wheels in the air. put one wheel on ground, one in air, trans in park. Can you rotate the wheel in the air? If no that means the pawl is intact. If yes, then the pawl is not stopping the ring and pinion from moving.
