I bought a set of Advance Auto Wearever calipers and brackets for an '04 WRX.

Took 'em apart to install clips and pads and didn't note that the Brackets are left and right-specific - like the Calipers, until I looked 'em up online today.

How do I tell if I put them on the correct side? They looked the same to me.

And the Calipers mounted up fine.

Bottom caliper slide pin has a bushing, top doesn't.  Swap the pins from top to bottom - well I guess you probably can't do that.  The pin bores are probably different sizes and the one with a bushing wont' fit in the other bore.  I just throw away the pin bushings on personal vehicles and would leave it as is.

Off the top of my head, I think the pins are different lengths. So use a screwdriver or something to probe them out to see which hole is deeper.

if they mounted, you put put them on right.

 If not the slide pins would've been on the outside and they couldn't mount.

If the caliper bracket is symmetric it could be installed “upside down” on the opposite side on models that have symmetric caliper bolts, which I think this one does.

Looked up OEM or the aftermarket parts?  

That OEM are left/right handed doesn’t guarantee the aftermarket are.  If they can make one part fit both sides, sometimes they do. It’s obviously not common because often they’re totally different, but I’ve seen parts that are left/right handed for OEM but a single part by aftermarket suppliers.

OEM...and they show the R and L on the OEM parts. And yeah...they can be installed 'upside' down on the other side.

'wearever' brand: Pic is from website. Looks universal, from these angles.

 

OEM: I'll take another look at them as this OEM image definitely shows differences in the casting on each end  and the other side.

I'm betting aftermarket just makes one part.  Pins, pin bore, orientation of brake hose are the only minor differences.  They can account for those things easily to make one part number.
