1988 GL What struts will innerchange?

Featured Replies

Hello All,

Bought a cut down wheelbase GL... Stripped down, farm truck! The previous owner welded the front struts in place and took out the coils. What struts will interchange with this car? A correct answer will be rewarded with a picture of the car.

A picture will help us to understand what exactly you’re dealing with. That way you can get the answer you’re looking for.

Any coil/strut combo from the corresponding type of chassis will work. It depends on if your "GL" came stock with the EA82 or the EA81 engine. There was some overlap of models being made in the 80's... the EA81's were in the 2-door-hatchbacks still in 1988. While all the other models (4 door wagon, 4 door sedan, 3-door lift-back coupe) had the EA82...

This doesn't include the XT series (wedges)... I'm not as familiar with those

Are you saying the PO welded the shaft of the strut to the strut housing so there was zero suspension movement?

6 star is correct - any strut from the same model will fit. 2wd ones have a lower spring perch but will still work. Being a farm hack you could probably manage to fit the other model struts without too much effort - eg: L series body with brat struts or brat body with L series struts ;)

Cheers

Bennie
