blow off valves

Featured Replies

I need to put a blow off valve on my new RX (88 for those that didn't see the other posts). now I know I need a recircalating(sp one that puts the air back in) one, but how do I install it, and where do I get one from?

well the "kill 2 birds with one stone" way would be to add a wrx IC. this way you get an intercooler and a bpv

sounds like an idea, which ofcouse I'm open too. how hard is that to put on a non spyder intake manafold?

Blow off valve is not necessary if you are running stock boost. Theres a neat little thing called a dash pot built into your intake.. stops the throttle plate from slamming shut and backing airflow up into the compressor.

Heres a pic of how mine is plumbed

picture_001.jpg

recirc bov can be had in junkyards on such cars as

saab turbo's

mazda turbo's

a few other cars

i have a nice shiny hks ssqv valve to put on mine but then again i don't need to worry about it being recirc any more

also the hks one i have

has a adjuster so

it can be used on maf type cars and if you cna't adjust it enough

they have a recirc adapter for it as well

the mitsubishi dsm ones are recirc valves, and hold strong to 20 lbs. and the flange and tube are easy to plumb.

does the spider intake work with the 87 flapper style fuel injcetion?

spider will work with any style of maf as long as it has no air leaks between it and the maf

You could mount it right smack on top of your existing plenum, the one that says "4wd turbo" on it....Me and subarutex chopped up my old one to make it fit, and used a stock wrx bov on it. Tight squezze but it works. I've been ok without recurculating my bov. It makes for a lil bit of rough running at idle, but nothing too incredibly serious.

at idle?

it should only affect it during the times it actually is sposed to vent off

like hi psi on one side and hhi vacum on the other side of the signal hose

yours may possible be leaking .. maybe

but normally a non recirc setup will only cause problems on a maf system when it dumps all the extra air out that the ecu has already metered air for

and then with out all that air you go rich for avery short time and it stumbles trying to burn it all

if its plumbed for recirc style then it dumps all the metered air just in front of the turbo inlet

and behind the maf

so the sudden pressure burst off the bov keeps the maf from metering air to make up for the sudden pressure dump... if that makes any sense it does in my twisted little mind :)

with a recirc valve vented to atmosphere, on maf systems, it makes your idle funny.

if it was a map sensor car, you can vent to atmosphere with no problems.

oh yeah duh.. recirc sorta hangs open if i recal now .. doh!

and boost fully closes it

glad i have a map sensor

Looks liek everyone well covered the issue by the time i seen this one....

Id say you STILL need a BOV-BPV even stock. The dash pot is just not enough for us crazy folk who drive teh F out of these things.

exactly why I want one, so I guess I'm getting an wrx intercooler, is there another intercooler bpv combo I can look for thou, maybe something cheaper? (always looking to save some money)

These cars will run FINE with a properly adjusted atomospheric BOV.

You need to adjust any BOV with shims and such so that it isn't open at idle, but open to vent the boost.

We have used the same set-up on a Legacy Turbo (uses a MAF sensor much like the EA82) and it worked with no problems at all. People said it could be done...Just go out and try it. On this car we replaced the stock re-circ valve with an atmospheric one

We spent some more money on the BOV for the Legacy Turbo (wanted more noise) so the older Atmospheric valve got passed onto an EA82T car. Once it was properly shimmed it rean without problems, and scared the piss outta people when it vented.

By "shims" you need to shim the spring. The "shims are nothing but washers to adjust the force of the spring.

my hks ssqq bov has a nice adjustable bolt in it to accomplish the same thing :)

The HKS is probably one of the nicest BOV's on the market... However they also are something like 350 USD. So i'm guesing for the majority of the people wanting a BOV on their EA82T, aren't going to spend 350 on a BOV. Especially since you can do an I/C, BOV, and alot of other crap for far less money than the BOV alone

i.. traded for it.. 2 stock recirc style units off 2 diff cars i di dnot know i was getting the hks one at the time i was told it was a blitz

I read in an issue of Sport Compact Car a while ago, and they tested a bunch of stock and aftermarket BOV and recerc valves. You know which was the most consistant with the least amount of boost occilation? The stock WRX recurc valve. No kidding.

OK, that the risk of being unpopular (never was anyway), I’ll ask the question…

Beyond the incredibly fashionable Chirp-Pffiisssst noise, is there any good reason to run a non-recirculate valve? Perhaps simplified plumbing, but certainly no performance gain, right? And a properly routed recirc should reduce spool time in On-Off-On throttle episodes (like shifting). No offence to those who like the sound, its cool and all, but its just for show right, or I’m I missing something here?

Gary

i prefer show&go......little whoosh, little pumb back

HAHAHA I LIKE THE SOUND OF THAT. in the sig now...now more "all show and no go"
