October 19, 200421 yr Quick question: Will all EA-71 cylinder heads, (regardless of year), interchange with all EA-71 blocks, (regardless of year)? Are the pushrods the same? Disregard the emission stuff, EGR , air suction ect, I can make that all work. But am I missing something? Can a 1984 EA71 take the cylinder head from a 79 1600? They physically look the same. Todd
October 19, 200421 yr i took apart e pre '80 ea71 and the valve rockers wer held on by long bolts. on a post 80 they were slipped over studs and were held on with nuts. subtle but different. i've also been told that a hydro lifter ea71 will have pushrods with different tips.
October 19, 200421 yr The heads can be interchange but try to use 79? or later heads since they came with better valve spring retainers. Pushrod interchange depend on the lifters, you don't want to mix and match solid lifter pushrods with hydraulic lifter pushrods and vice verca.
October 20, 200421 yr the late ones did. Not in the U.S. Our EA71s were all solid lifter. The '84 and later EA71s did have different heads though, but only in that they had the larger EA81 valves in them.
October 20, 200421 yr Richierich had an issue a long time ago with a Gen1 Brat. Turned out he had an older solid lifter block with the newer style heads.... I believe he had to change them to the old style heads... Richie, you out there?
October 20, 200421 yr Author So the old heads, 78,79 can go on a later, 81-84 EA71 block? (Absent the EGR, air suction modification that will need to be done.) Todd
October 20, 200421 yr Todd, I'm hoping Richie shows up, as I don't know the specifics.... there are a few JDM EA71's around with hydraulic lifters....
