My brothers wife had a 84/85 hatch with a light behind the subaru emblem on the front grill.does anyone know how long they had these and what were they on?Do you ever come across these at the junkyard?

It's called a third eye. I don't know what years they came on wagons and stuff, but Brats came on them stock on the GL modes of the year 1982. You DO occaisonally see them in the junkyards, I've seen 3 in the same one a while back.

They're passing lamps. They operate only with the high beams on. Offered from 1980-1982 in GL's.

I refer to them as 3rd eyes (or in the case of my '81 brat, 5th eye) and you wink at someone before you pass them. i have one, but i don't intend to put it on the brat, A. because i like the huge logo on there now. B. because i don't pass enought people in my 1.8 to make the wiring project worthwhile. But they are unique..

all it takes is about 45 ft of wire, 23 ft red, 22 ft green, marine water tite fuse holder with 5 amp fuse, and a switch

 

the side lite makes it worth wile, and helps to fill in the middle, great for looking ahead for trails and deer

Hey subiemech85 is there a write up on wiring one up? or do you think you could (or anyone else) PM me some instructions on wire up a passing lamp? I installed one on my hatch and ive been wanting to wire it up but dont know how. thanks a lot

i stuck one on my 86 hatch, and with my 4 other square lights, that makes 5 up front stock =], more or less.

 

you can install them on any ea81, after you saw out the stock hood latch support, and bolt in the third eye, the holes are already drilled for you!

i didnt use the cover, or the motor, so wiring was just three wires.
