Bad JuJu to re-use axle spring pins?

Featured Replies

Is it bad karma to re-use spring pins when changing axles?

Those things are like $4 a piece from online parts stores!

...OK I'm cheap!

But is there a better place to get them? Hardware store, NAPA?

$16 for 4 for my rear end isn't too bad I guess but is there anything wrong with just reusing them?

Ive had no problem re-using them. Along with the castle-nut and the cone washers as well. Seems the CV's I get only come with the axle. Only a few have come with the castle nut and almost none have come with new spring pins.

Your old one should be fine, as long as its not bent or crushed.

I reuse everything.....well, headgaskets dont work a 2nd time around tho...i tried that... :drunk:

I've reused them several times with no ill effects as long as they're not damaged in any way.

I bent one so bad on a rear CV ( inner ) once that it only went in half way, I turned it around to bach it back out and the pin actually wound itself around the punch inside the CV. Once that happened I couldn't get either out as the center was too thick.

I ended up having to cut as much of the CV cup off as possible without cutting into the splines from the diff and then used an old screwdriver as a cold chisel to chop the pin off and then manager to pull the pin out with pliers then bash the punch out.

not fun, took ages and two cutting grinder discs.

I would have just cut it off and ran it
