moshem74 Posted January 6, 2005 Share Posted January 6, 2005 hi last week i change the fuel filter and everything was ok. this week on sunday, i'm waiting for the red light to change, the car start to tell me that the engine want to stop.....the engine sadenly shut down,i took the key out and put it on again ,and start the car again, now it was working fine.... today i'm going to work in the morning.....standing again in the red light(not the same one), it become green, i preesed the gas sloaly.....start to drive....sadenly it become like the last time....like the gas is not comming to the engine....the car stops in the middle of the high way, i took the key out....put in on again , and it didnt start, i put it again....and it started, i drove to my work and after whan i finished working , bake to the house...the car drove just fine.... what can it be? whan i came to my house, i changed again the fuel filter to a new one and also the spark plugs for new set(the ones that were in the engine were 10 mounth old). what can it be? the fuel pump is 1 year old - new electric strong fuel pump(not original, something stronger). does anyone can help me with this mistary? thank you all for your fasr answer. the car is subaru DL 1.6 liter with carburetor year 1993. thank you. moshe. northguy Posted January 6, 2005 Share Posted January 6, 2005 You could very well have debris in the jets in the carburator. Try running the rpms up to 4k or 4.5k for a few seconds the next time it dies and see if that helps to clear it out. If not, you may need to disassemble the carb and clean it. Skip Posted January 6, 2005 Share Posted January 6, 2005 no idea of where you are from but it sure sounds like symptoms Northguy told you or it could be water in the gas do you know what "dry gas" is? how about rubbing alcohol? how about isopropyl alcohol? They are all the same thing try a can in the petrol tank Does this car have two fuel filters? Some cars with carburetors in the USA do. phishy75 Posted January 6, 2005 Share Posted January 6, 2005 Methyl hydrate is was gasline antifreeze is made from. Does sound like it could be water in the gas - this should fix it. Good idea from Northguy too... Are you sure there is consistent power to the fuel pump? It could be shorting out if there is a bad connection. Good luck. Skip Posted January 6, 2005 Share Posted January 6, 2005 small warning: Methyl Hydrate also know as shellac thinner can be used but has recently shown to disolve some plastics in the fuel system. boing Posted January 6, 2005 Share Posted January 6, 2005 Hi, Water certainly is a possibility. The thinking behind it is that when you come to a light the fuel sloshes forward and back as you stop causing any water (which is on the bottom of the tank) could be allowed to enter your fuel line. I've also seen these same symptoms with the wrong air mixture. You're engine gets over fueled and choked out. Restarting requires the fuel to minimize before the car will start. does it smell like fuel in your car when you try to start it? Good Luck and keep posting here until we get to the problem. moshem74 Posted January 6, 2005 Author Share Posted January 6, 2005 hi. i'm from israel. the car does smell like fuel after it stops.... i added today 4 liters of methanol to a full tank....the car driving a lot better ant faster... also i change spark plugs for a new set and the fuel filter to a new one.... lets hope it wont happend again. moshe from ISRAEL.
