DIFF lock not engaging

Featured Replies

AWD XT6 (this one is not crazyhorses old car, different one) that a guy installed a new clutch in just before i got it. he said the DIFF lock worked but not after he installed the clutch. all the vacuum lines appear connected. i push the button and nothing happens. if i give those little solenoids 12 volts should they click? haven't tried it yet, wasn't sure if that was a good idea.

any ideas?

Before applying 12v directly, I would suggest testing for voltage at the solenoid pack

There should be 12v at one of the solenoids at all times when the ignition is on.

If you aren't getting voltage to one or both of the solenoids, then you have trouble somewhere before them. You can apply power dorectly to them without harming anything, and yes they should click.

when I installed my FT4wd w/difflock, I had to do all my own wiring. Its really easy.. One power in to the switch.. two out. One to each solenoid.

On the solenoid side, theres a power in to each one.. the other wire is a ground.

ahh screw that, wire it up to a toggle switch!!!!!............................j/k try the correct way first.

you would also want the one wire going into the switch to be powered only when the keys are on e.g. off the coil, somewhere off ur sterio, so that you dont drain your battery while its parked.

WELL... I am kinda having the same problem. first off is there a diff lock light that is supposed to come on? When I press the diff lock button I can hear a sound between the steering pump and the firewall right behind the pump. It sounds like a vaccum or solinoid is trying to engage but no light or any change in my ride. How many vaccum lines are connected to this part and what else can i look at to check why its not engaging? Any ideas??? My damn chiltons doesnt give me any illistrations for diff lock components.

When I first got my 6 I thought it didn't work either. Once in awhile it would come on, but most of the time it wouldn't. I'd hear the vacuum, but no diff lock light. I read around on xt6.net and found that I might need to have the car moving for the light to come on. I tried it and it works everytime now...after driving about 50 feet or so in a straight line.

Gary, do you hear the vacuum sound like Gravityman was descring?

Gravityman, it sounds like yours is probably working. Try pushing the button while the car is moving and hopefully that'll solve your problem :) Hopefully it's something as simple as that.

Me to bob I'll let you know! Should the light come on or will the driving feeling just change? Thank you.

The light should come on...Driving feeling doesn't really change under normal conditions, but then again you shouldn't use it in normal conditions. :) You'll notice the difference when the roads are slick though...the car has a lot more grip when accelerating

Well I tried it while I was driving but no light. I heard the vaccum but nothing happened. Does any one know what the vaccum part is called? and if they have access to one for cheap??? This is a big pain in my ankle! Thanks for your help!

Does anyone know how to post pictures from your computer instead of having to use a URL?

i do not hear my solenoids clicking on. but i don't have very good hearing either.

DIFF LOCK engages and disengages best when driven in a straight line at low speeds. it will in other situations as well, but most consistently as mentioned. and the light should come on when it's engaged. if the light comes on, it should be engaged. i know of XT6's that would actually be engaged but the light IS NOT ON, but i've never heard of an XT6 where the light would come on when the car wasn't actually engaged. so if your light comes on i think you're golden. (you'll know it as soon as you try to turn on dry pavement if you're curious, the binding is unmistakeable).
