March 7, 200521 yr OK... A lot of us have looked around high and low for a solution to the infamous "fuel cut" gremlin that plagues us that run higher than factory boost. Disclaimer: This was done on a modified engine (custom DP, WRX IC) you're results may vary. About a year and a half ago i bought an HKS FCD used off of Nasioc. I never got around to installing it. Saturday, Dan (danbob99) and I installed it on his beast of a wagon. We hooked it into the sensor signal wire coming off of the MAF. (the manual reccomends doing this under the dash, we opted to do it by the MAF itself for easier wiring incase of failure) The sensor signal wire is the White wire coming off pin 5. How to wire it: The FCD has 4 wires. (1)ign. power (2) ground (3)MAF signal input (4) MAF signal output. Cut the MAF sensor signal wire (the white one). Crimp the end comign from the MAF to the (3). Crimp the other end to (4). Find someplace to tap for ign. power and ground for the FCD. How to tune it: Set the FCD to 12 (it has 12 positions). Make sure car still runs, no CELs, etc... Go for a drive. You will find it still hits fuel cut. Set the FCD to 11, go for drive. You will find that it no longer hits fuel cut. We actually started at 9 (setting it any lower and the car had a really hard time idling). And turned it up till we hit fuel cut. Not the safest way to do it, thus use the instructions I gave above. The unit itself is the HKS Fuel Cut Defencer STD. See link here: http://www.hksusa.com/products/?id=683. Other versions are available... we found the STD to be the one that worked for us. You'll notice on that link that WRX is supposed to use the STD on setting 10... The car now pulls just as hard as before... but with no fuel cut. It is quite amazing. Recap: HKS FCD Standard Version, Setting 11.
March 7, 200521 yr That's really cool! How much did the unit cost? What kind of boost is the car running?
March 7, 200521 yr Sorry to go off topic, but your PM inbox is full, Tex. Are you still interested in selling those coil springs from the RX? Please PM me or respond to the thread in the marketplace. Thanks.
March 7, 200521 yr Author Unit retails at $125. Can be had on ebay a little bit cheaper: http://search.ebay.com/hks-fcd_W0QQfkrZ1QQfromZR8 I found that one for $80 on Nasioc. Car is currently running 11psi.
March 8, 200521 yr NIIIICE! Thanks Tex, i'll try not to forget this gem. I still have yet to experiment with higher boost, dont want to until my Intercooler goes in. -Brian
March 8, 200521 yr Author I also had posted I found a site with schematics to make one of these. I bought all the parts, but not being electrically inclined, wasn't able to get it assembled. I believe Skip may have been working on this aswell, but I'm not sure what came of it. Here is the link to that information: http://www.teamfc3s.org/info/articles/fcd/diy_fcd.htm I had to buy 10 of the IC's for that schematic, and still have them. I'll give someone knowledgable one for free, but I'll ask that they make me up one too
March 8, 200521 yr Thank you SubaruTex for your insight and installation advice. I read this thread all of 2 minutes or so this morning before going to work. I clicked on the Ebay link you posted and simply purchased one. There's not reason to wait to purchase this product. I jumped on it as soon as I read about the solution. *&$# Fuel Cut!!! Here's the one I picked up. It's the standard one like you mentioned. I'll use the exact same setting (11) as you. I'm looking forward to it. Time for a new clutch now. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7958635869&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT
March 8, 200521 yr Wow!! That's great to hear. It's always good to hear that someone defeated the fuel cut monster. I'm not sure what the heck is up with my car. I can run 11psi all day long with no fuel cut. One time I was actually running 12psi, but it only happened once. The moment I tried to run more than that, the car hit fuel cut again and I was forced to reduce the boost back to 11psi again. I suppose that I'll either buy or build an FCD sometime in the future.
March 20, 200521 yr Wow!! That's great to hear. It's always good to hear that someone defeated the fuel cut monster. Is there anyone else who has put this devise on since it's been mentioned here? I have yet to put mine on but will soon enough. All that's left is to install the Stage II clutch that WJM mentioned to me in a PM a while back, get the injectors cleaned and install/run a 50-60hp shot of Nitrous Express wet nitrous kit. That should be good for some low 13 second runs.
June 1, 200520 yr Subarutex, I plan on getting this installed this weekend. Hopefully, I can get an electronic boost controller installed as well. All that would be left is an upgraded clutch like Will had and some bigger fuel injectors. A fuel injector controller would be perfect if I could get the right settings off someone. Then the EA82T boost gods will rejoice. Must bump this post. I don't want to forget about it.

Dan has been running with it disconnected and with the boost turned down for awhile. He wasn't entirely happy with how the car behaved (mainly idle behavior) after having the FCD in for awhile. Kinda weird, cause it worked great, then for some reason some morning the car decided it didn't want to idle. Unhooked the FCD and it idled... we're still not sure what is up. It is still in place, and is still used on occasion, but not for daily driving.

If there's enough interest, I could piggyback this board with mine and get them for basically free. It may not end up as pretty as the one off ebay, but it'll be a heck of a lot cheaper.
December 28, 200520 yr Bizzump! Anyone else install this device? Thoughts/comments? Almost a year later and my lazy arse haven't installed it. Better yet, I'm going to the garage now to look for it. Hope I didn't lose it.
